From BBC News - Scapa Flow diver, 53, dies in Orkney
A diver has died after an incident at Scapa Flow in Orkney.

The unresponsive 53-year-old man, who was believed to have been exploring a scuttled German wreck, was airlifted to Balfour Hospital in Kirkwall on Sunday.

Northern Constabulary said the man, who has not yet been named, was pronounced dead later that day.

A force spokesperson said: "A full report on the circumstances, which do not appear to be suspicious, has been submitted to the procurator fiscal."

A diver airlifted from the water off the coast of Orkney has died, police have said.

The 53-year-old man was pulled from the waters of Scapa Flow after police received reports about an unresponsive diver at around 12.40pm yesterday.

The man, who has not been named, was taken to Balfour Hospital in Kirkwall where he was later pronounced dead.

Northern Constabulary said a report on the circumstances, which they said are not suspicious, have been submitted to the procurator fiscal.

The man was believed to have been exploring underwater naval wrecks.

Scapa Flow lagoon is popular with divers because of the amount of wrecks hidden beneath its waters.

It was the main anchorage of the Royal Navy and has many relics left of British naval history.

In June 1919 the interned German navy scuttled most of its High Seas Fleet there to prevent them from falling into Allied hands. Eight of the vessels remain there.

Tributes paid to father-of-three who died in Orkney diving accident
Simon Gaskell, WalesOnline Nov 1 2011

Tributes have been paid to a father-of-three who died in a diving accident at Scapa Flow in Orkney.

Stuart MacCormac, 53, from Thornhill, Cardiff, was airlifted to Balfour Hospital in Kirkwall on Sunday but was pronounced dead.

He was believed to have been exploring a scuttled German wreck.

Today his family, including wife Denise and children Alexander, 28, Cameron, 26, and Elinor, 22, described their husband and father as a man who “loved life”.

Mrs MacCormac said: “He was a gentle man whose life revolved around family and was very happy with that.

“Everybody instantly took to him. I don’t know a single person who didn’t like Stuart.”

It is believed Mr MacCormac got into difficulty after a camera was dropped on his second dive of the day.

A Northern Constabulary spokesperson said a report on the circumstances had been submitted to the procurator fiscal. (emphasis added)
