I know where they are. Some public safety divers In the area dive them regularly.

Yeah swampy I'm one of those public safety divers :)

having seen a dragger go by me about 15' away (while I was under), I can tell you that the commercial guys aren't real particular about whether or not a diver is below. Be very, very careful! My "surface support" yelling to them only resulted in the universal finger gesture from the crew :)

I've only been diving for a year now but it seems to me that there are a significant amount of people who do not like divers. They include lobstermen, policemen and now I find scallopers have an issue with us.

Why is that?

By the way thanks for all the advice. I learn something new everytime I dive or speak to a diver.

commercial fishermen dislike us because we seriously impact their income source (we don't but they think we do). Some of the police don't like us because they are local boys i.e. they have brothers, Dads, cousins etc. who are commercial fishermen. Once again, only my opinion.

I must say that I have never personally had a real issue with the police. Most of the stories I hear about diver/cop altercations involve guilt on the divers part. I have never heard of diver harrassment for no reason :)

People don’t like divers do to stereotyping. It is an unfortunate truth that some divers are glutens. They take and take and take., well beyond the limits allowed. This is especially true with lobster divers, who are constantly taking shorts. Scallop divers usually take all their lift bags will allow.

I don’t lobster. I don’t like what I have seen done by many lobster divers. The unlawful taking of lobster or breaking off of claws in only one aspect of it, there are others such as the destruction they do to other marine life habitats in their search for that lobster. When I scallop dive, I take only what my family and I can eat that night, and no more.

This stereotyping is just that ! It is as it is in all walks of life, a small few giving the larger group a bad rep. I believe that most lobster divers, have the proper permits and being divers, they are more conscientious about the marine environment and not taking shorts or more than they need. It takes approximately 7 year for a lobster to attain legal size. Taking short is a heavy impact on the species. I believe that most divers want to protect the marine environment, which we get so much enjoyment out of. Unfortunately we all pay the price for that small group of divers who can’t seem to play by the rules.

I've actually had very good encounters with the policemen of Rockport, Gloucester and even the "Green" police. Now lobstermen is a different story. I don't even lobster and they get in a huff if I am anywhere near a trap. I've also been aboard a dive boat when a lobsterboat purposefully ran over our dive flag and the captain yelled obsenities at us.

Despite the fact that divers have little to no impact on their livliehood they think we do and they get worked up over it.

Same here. While the EPOs can be a PITA, they serve an important role and most of the one's I've met have been friendly and polite. One even helped me with my gear as I climbed up to the car. If you don't break the rules, there is no reason to fear them. Check your lobsters in the water and then once again at the water's edge. The minute you step onto dry land with that bag, you are game for the EPO people to check your bag.

Hey, Gang-

I just discovered this board! I am a recreational diver from Salisbury, MA and was psyched to see some other locals here- arduous and swampy!

I go out for some lobster and scallops from time to time, but have gotten most of my scallops south of cape ann in the past, but now have a boat up here, so I am interested in learning more about the beds off salisbury if you are willing to share any more info...??? how deep? Also, how concerned are you guys about the draggers? I saw the one post by someone who got passed by a rake at 15 feet - how fun was that?

thanks for any help you are willing to share!

Welcome to the board Krusty

I have not had the chance to hit the scallop beds off salsbury yet, but one of the retired firefighters on my department (Amesbury) has been to them. Also one of the cops from next door dives them all the time.
