Do you feel the need to fill in your present and past diving history/training/experience for your fellow SB members to view...?

IMO --- it is a really big help, in doing so helps to to some degree validate your diving level and so gives support to your input on the various scuba topics you post on. I think everyone should take a minute and share with your fellow members the basic highlights....its free and simple. ;)

Who is to say that people tell the truth?

In an ideal world I suppose........ I tend to judge people by what they actually say, and even then not too seriously as it's very easy to misunderstand, or be misled, on the Internet.

I did fill in mine once upon a time, but then someone changed something and it got lost. I haven't been bothered since then really.

actually i wasnt a fan of putting my info in but i felt that it may help other SB'ers to ask about local info or approaching me in general

now im opening our home to a few SB'ers (in our junk room though), taking them diving and ive got them hooked on tim tams so it might not have been a good thing that they could find out so much aboot me :D

People can and will tell and print misleading or un true data....this happens all the time in our lives. I do find that when I click on a SB bio that contains scuba background info. that is consist with my understanding of the system....I 'assume' the member is above board in most cases and it does allow me to have a better understanding from were this fellow is coming from. I find and feel that when all you see is blanks or silly jabber filled in then this individual may just not be as creditable in regards to some particular threads topic of discussion.
Your bio....it contains little in the way of your scuba background---I don't know you from Sam, so I persl. may find it difficult to engage in serious dialog regarding a serious sport which scuba diving is. If you or I never engage but in the non scuba parts of this board than the bio information is not as important. I hope you take the time to fill in your bio at some point...I am sure many here would enjoy and benefit from what they might learn.
I come across a number of divers daily on SB boasting experience in a multitude of scuba areas and giving advise and making recommendations with out having a single clue to their background and exposure in the area they are discussing...if they are approached to validate their background they just get defensive....someone whom does not have a reason to hide the data will be happy to provide the reader with such upon request....most folks are eager to share their history and experience. Most of us on the board i think do provide factual bio information....but still far to many don't....they should!

I had filled mine out some time ago, but when the site crashed it was lost. Reading this thread prompted me to do it again.

I think it is a help. I like to look at profiles sometimes when I'm reading a post thats giving some kind of advise that I'm interested in. I know people can put in whatever they want but you have to hope that they are being honest.

I keep mine updated and I frequently look at the profiles for others. I can't control what others do on here, but I can be truthful about myself. I think it helps to know where the person's coming from, what type of experience they have, where and how much they dive, etc. Sure people can lie and make stuff up, but why? I think the lack of an intrinsic motivator to fake your profile keeps them pretty accurate. It just isn't worth the trouble to make that stuff up. Now there are always a few strange birds out there, but I believe the vast majority of the profiles are accurate.

I love not only bios, but pictures as well. It's good to put a face with the poster.

For those considering embellishing their profile, I would suggest that you consider the consequences WHEN you get outed! All it takes is one good friend to sign on and innocently joke about your inflated view of yourself and then you have lost all credibility. I remember there was one guy who came on as a noobie one week, and less than two weeks later his profile had him diving the Andrea Doria: Bwahahahahahaha! THAT was a fun thread to clean up!

Really, it's not a competition: we just want to know what you have really done! We already have users who have been below 1000 fsw as well as other incredible feats of Scuba. You can't impress us with your daring do! Just be honest!

I think having a complete profile goes a long way in putting a members posts in perspective.

How I handle thngs as a frequent cold water, relatively low visibility shore diver may be very different from a once a year vacation boat diving WWW.

Dive counts certs and such are informative too but you need to remember that this is the internet and it's all just stuff someone decided to type.

Pete
