I went out on the Explorer yesterday 26 FEB 2012. The day was gorgeous: light breeze, abundant sunshine. The first dive site was at Goldfish Bowl. I looked and didn't even bother to go because there were zero kelps and viz was near zero with the surge churning up the sand. So I sat topside and enjoyed the fresh air, reading my book.

Second and third dives were done at Cat Rock. On the way to Cat Rock, we found several dead baby mola mola floating on the surface. I did the second dive and saw a cool Hilton's Aeolid, some small seahares, a baby sheep crab in the leaves of the ONLY ONE strand of giant kelp and a harbor seal came out to watch me doing safety stop. The third dive was just a bit down from the second dive so I didn't even bother and stayed topside to enjoy the lovely weather. As I was sitting on the sun deck, I saw a sea lion popping up and down with a bunch of birds around it. Lo and be hold, it was tearing up a baby mola mola and it looked like the birds were waiting for the fish to die so that they can have some cheap eats.

Unfortunately an all-too-common situation this time of year. See my column about munched Molas:

Star Thrower Educational Multimedia (S.T.E.M.) Dive Dry Column

Apparently the sea lions rarely eat the Mola, they just "play" with them until they are dead. The Mola body is a bit tough to be very palatable except on the underbelly. I very rarely see any with bites taken out of the body, just the fins removed by the sea lions (and eyes by the seagulls)

We saw several dead ones as well off Anacapa this past weekend. Most had a fin torn off, but one was just a mola face floating among a few sea lions.

very interesting. Thanks for the column you wrote on the subject, Dr. Bill.

Sometimes the lst dive is the best dive, remember LOL. I am headed to Maui next week.

I've heard about this; so glad I haven't witnessed - yet...
