I didn't want the folks in SoCal to think I've dropped the plan to get permission from CDF&G to remove the invasive Asian seaweed Sargassum horneri from Catalina's Casino Pt. Dive Park. However, it has been put on hold until next season for the following two reasons:
1. The cool waters during the summer of 2010 resulting in far less mature S. horneri in the dive park, thus making mechanical control more difficult (immature plants being harder to remove). I have been away since mid-Oct and am not aware of the current status of this species, but think based on late summer water temperatures it may be similar to the previous year. Please feel free to post with your observations since I will not be diving the park for at least another month.
2. My mother had major cancer surgery several months ago so I have been in Florida to take care of her for the past few months and my focus this winter and spring will obviously be on her health and her needs.
