Someone mentioned Sanabell (SP?) island to me for diving or snorkeling. Is it worthwhile?

Sanibel. The beaches are great, the shelling is world class, the great diving is 20+ miles out.
Snorkeling/diving around the island will produce nothing more than a great view of the sandy bottom. Diving starts around 3-5 miles out and goes out from there.
