San Marcos in Mid-August

I'm going to be staying with my brother in San Marcos in Mid-August and would like to get a dive or two in while I'm there. I've looked at the charter boats out of San Diego, but since I'll be on vacation with my family, I'm not sure if I'll be able to get away for an entire day. I'm thinking that if I could do a 2 tank am or pm dive (shore or small boat), life would be good. I would need to rent tanks and weights, but would bring (or ship) the rest of my gear from home.

Are there shops or clubs in the area which run such trips like this? Any information or shop reccomendations would be very helpful.

Better choice would be to head south to san diego ... or north to Dana Point . Not much diving between Carlsbad and San Juan Capistrano. World famous surfing breaks .. just not much dive reefs.

Many good choices for a half day boat out of San Diego. My favorite, Marissa Dive Charters, others would include Waterhorse Charters, Lois Ann, Dive Connections. All have schedules and reservations online. All are out of the same general location in Quivera Basin.
