Hi!!
I am also new in SD, i'm living in La Jolla, and I spent the last week looking for some diving places! Usually people have their own gear here? and go on their own (with a buddy) for diving? Also, when you book for a boat, the diving is not guided?? I still do not know anyone who dives here, so I do not have a dive buddy for booking a trip on a boat!
I am used to the european system where you go to a diving resort, and they have organized dives that you join the day you would like to go, and they have all the equipment that you can rent on the same place. There is nothing like that here?
:)

There are boats that also rent out gears. All you have to do is ask them. Some may list equipment rental on their website (Peace charter) but most don't. However, they tend to have gears to rent if you ask. However, since that there are so many shops available in the area, there's no need to have the boat provide for the gears. You can go check out the shops to see who has what gears that you'd prefer to use for rent.

You can get a guided dive if that's what you want and don't mind paying extra for. All you have to do is tell the charter that you want a divemaster or a diveguide. They'll let you know how much it will cost. Or just hook up with local divers and get free guide service.

As far as dive buddies, you either get one assigned to you when you get to the boat, or ask one of the divers or diver groups on the boat to let you join in, or just post a thread on this forum and see who'd join up with you. We're friendly in SoCal.

I am diving with Hollywood divers October 23/24. They are heading out on the Raptor/Spectre.
