I will be in San Diego on February 8th and want to get in a dive. I am a newly certified open water diver. I would be willing to hire a DM for the day or hook up with a dive shop that has a dive planned for that day. Can anyone suggest a dive shop or DM that would like to take a newb out for the day?

try these (IDK anything about either):
Scuba San Diego - Guided Dives - Scuba San Diego
Trident Divers - Services

The 8th being a Thursday it's possible the Power Scuba Meetup group is diving LaJolla Shores that night. It's a pretty regular event for them. Upcoming Events | Power Scuba: San Diego Scuba Diving (and Beyond) (La Jolla, CA)

I don;'t know of any diveboats that will be doing a Thursday dive but it's slightly possible - nothing scheduled yet. More likely they're diving Fri-Sun,
The 3 possibilities are Humboldt, Marissa or Lois Ann. Divebums - Diveboats
Things sort of slow down over the winter months. None of them put a DM in the water unless you pay for your own - all should have a list of contacts.

Either LaJolla Cove or LaJolla Shores would be suitable for a newer diver. IMO there's more to see sooner at the Cove than the Shores. But the Shores will still have parking after 8AM . Divebums has some details on all the shore dives - Divebums - Dive Sites

Thanks for the response Diversteve. Trident Divers looks like a winner. I will be calling them and setting up a guided tour.

San Diego and Orange county to the north of san Diego county were the birth places of recreational diving in the US.

I would also if time permits visit Scrip's Institution of Oceanography in La Jolla, just north of San Diego

You may also enjoy and as a new diver find educational the following thread on the 1949 National Geographic article about the Bottom Scratchers of San Diego, the worlds first dive club. It highlights La Jolla Cove considers by many almost a diving shrine - It is an easy dive - snorkel

There are several historical articles about historical equipment and divers

Good luck

Surfraj- I’d love to joint your group. Give me the details. Time, exact meetup location, etc. I’ll be solo, so if I can buddy up or three-up with someone that would be great.
