Hi all:

My 13 year old daughter and I have recently taken a free pool intro at a local dive shop and have decided we'd like to continue with scuba by getting our certification. We're excited to get started and fortunately we don't have a need for a quick turnaround on instruction.

I found this board on the net and browsing the forums it looks as if there's lots of good info here. From an absolute noob standpoint my first questions to research here will be 1) difference between certifications (PADI/NAUI/???) and 2) locating a great instructor here in town (class/private/???)

Looking forward to this adventure!

Hi,

The major open water instruction facilities in San Diego are Ocean Enterprises and Sport Chalet. Both are PADI facilities. My original open water is through PADI. I do not know anything about any other agencies open water courses. However, my thought is that most of the open water courses will be generally the same, as they all need to teach the same basic principles and skills. Therefore, I think finding a quality instructor is more important than the certifying agency for your initial open water certification.

I will send to you by personal message a name and email address of a private PADI instructor in San Diego. I took my advanced open water class from this individual and found that person to be a very good instructor.

Welcome to the 'board and hopefully the underwater world!!!
