I am going on the Great Escape on Saturday to San Clemente Island. I have never been there before. Anyone have any tips or things to try to see? Also, if anyone has been there recently, what was the water temp?

Thanks.

San Clemente can be a fantastic experience... often great visibility. Just make sure the G.E. doesn't take any heat-seeking missiles up its exhaust (just kidding).

What you see will depend on what part of the island you dive so it is hard to say in advance without such knowledge. Enjoy!

I haven't been there yet (tried twice), but I have heard great things about diving San Clemente. Supposedly better viz than Catalina, lots of lobsters and abalone. A friend of mine saw several mola molas swimming by while diving out there.

Have fun! I wish I was going!

San Clemente over Labor Day (all shot with Jaye's little Sony P&S) shots here.

My Nikon was in the shop. Its killing me, as we had some of the greatest conditions and best diving ever.

EVER.

If San Clemente was 80 degrees instead of 60 degrees, Hughes, Nekton and Aggressor would have ships there. The diving can be THAT good.

Enjoy.

Vis was great every time I've been there. I was always intrigued by the under water rock formations ... The walls seem to be prefectly vertical, with corners at 90 degrees, making it feel like I was swimming down ancient streets. As for lobster ... I always saw LOTS, but they always seemed to be "Shorts." My theory is that a lot of the military guys are divers and harvest the legal sized bugs, leaving only the shorts for the rest of us.
