I will be traveling to San antonio on Dec 9-12 and was looking for suggestions on dive locations.

I have found Comal river drift and Joes place at Medina lake.

Will these be good diving at this time of year? What should I expect for temperatures ( I am coming from Michigan so I am used to a bit colder water ). Is there a dive shop around where I can rent equipment/wetsuit?

Thanks

The comal will be warm; it's spring fed and a constant temp year round. It's a popular place for winter local diving. Medina lake is where I got certified and have never returned. I think it would be fairly chilly, but not unbearable.

The two local dive shops are Duggans and Dive World. I know Dive world rents gear, I imagine that Duggan does also.

It's about 2 hrs to Lake Travis with traffic in Austin. That's a much more substantial dive, but also might be getting a little cold in December. There's a big community of Lake Travis divers on this forum, so they'll have much more specific information for you.

Canyon Lake has been decent this year. The Comal and San Marcos River are about 70 degrees year round with clear water. Max depth in both is about 10 feet. I also recommend Lake Travis in Austin.
I've never been a big fan of Medina Lake.

If you are looking for deep dives (80+) I would suggest Lake Travis. Canyon is a good local dive, but has limited viz, usually 5' or less. You can expect December temps in the low 50's. You can check historical dive conditions here.

If you'd be more interested in warmer water I'd suggest the Comal River. As mentioned above, the temperature is a constant 70 (f) and New Braunfels is a short drive from SA.

If you need u/w maps check Duggan Diving.

If you decide to give Lake Travis a try, talk to Robert at Welcome to Lake Travis Scuba. The boat dives are a lot more interesting than the shore diving and Robert has great connections with all the local shops and will be able to help you with gear rental.

Should you rent gear for a Travis shore dive, go with Scubaland. Much better gear than Dive World. Both are close to the lake located on RR 620.
