Apologies if this was stated already and I just missed it, but I believe that if you do take an artifact you have an obligation to preserve it.

Taking something without putting forth an effort to preserve or reverse the state it's in does nothing but destroy it and no one benefits from that.

Assuming there are no legal/moral restrictions on taking an artifact one of the best things that could happen to it would be for someone to preserve, display and share it's history with others so they could appreciate it as well.
