I went diving at Good Harbor Beach this weekend in Gloucester... swam out to Salt Island. Man oh man, what a swim! It took us about 15-20 minutes to get out to the island, and that was going at a good clip. Does anybody know a number on just how far off shore Salt Island is at high tide?

It was a good dive, excellent (25+ft) vis, and saw easily 15-20 striper, schooled on the backside of the island. Won't rush back because of the long haul from the parking lot to the beach, then the long swim to the site, but worth going back to next season.

I just looked it up on my plotting software. It is roughly 600ft from the closest point on Briar Neck to Salt Island. From Good harbor Beach directly across from the western tip of the Island it is more like 1200 ft.

Sorry I don't have an answer re: the distance at high tide, I just know you can walk to it at low tide.
Did you see any bugs? I have heard that Salt Island is either the best place or the worst place to go lobstering.

Given the way people are about their "spots" I bet the people who caught a lot of lobsters there said it is "the worst place" and the people who didn't catch any said it was "the best place". :D

There is an entrance to the beach next to the Good Harbor Beach Inn on the northern end of the beach. You could dump gear there w/ your buddy then park and walk back to it. Its across from Amelia's.

True dat:D

We saw a few lobster... definitely not a Cat. Rocks in that regards, though. And thats a good tip about dropping the gear off! I think that was the worst part... lugging the gear such a distance, in sand, no less.
