I'm thinking of committing the ultimate sacrilege for a sailor, trading in my sailboat for an offshore powerboat. Where we are, we have to go out 50 miles into the gulf to get good dives in. My sailboat's top speed is 7.5 knots, so it takes forever to get there. Diving has really torn me in two. I can't bear to part with my sailboat, but I can't stand not being able to dive from her. Besides, with a powerboat, I can do some fishing, too. I've been fretting over this for months. Two passions that I can not reconcile!

I feel your pain. I learned quite a lot about boating, from a small daysailor I had for years as a kid. Then I starting diving, and knew I had to make the change from a blowboat to a stinkpot. But it's worth it. As you mention, you can get some fishing in too, but you could also take up spearfishing, and bring back the largest one. We love it. The idea of joining a sailing club is really good. It would keep your love of sailing alive. Good luck.

Safe diving to you.

Get a Macgregor 26

POWERING AND SKIING

24 mph, waterskiing and sailing

A Macgregor does operate as both a sail and powerboat. Unfortunately, in it's attempt to do both, it turns out that it does neither of them well. It's a planing (powerboat) hull with a sail on it. I've never owned one, but that's the universal complaint about MacGregors.

Sailboats have always been a thing of real beauty.....MacGregors, not so much. They remind me of a Clorox bottle. I imagine it sails like one too.

They have.
And it does, or a car.
