Sam, I am pretty sure there I had no training about safety stops "back in the day" nor do I believe I would have been able to hold one (since I had to swim my rig down to start a dive anyway, at least when diving cold water).

As Thal has written several times, the idea of a safety stop seems to have come into vogue some time during the 80s as a way to slow down ascents since people were ascending much faster than they had contemplated. Perhaps it was during the DSAT research which led to the RDP that safety stops finally became "the norm" -- but I don't know.

So, Sam, please provide us with the answer!
