I was talking about diving the east end of Dyke 8, the actual levee itself, not the part you access by driving up the road across from Briggs Ranch Drive, this is in El Dorado County, not sacramento county.

thats the one

Didn't have much to do today, so I loaded up the kayaks and headed for Negro Bar in Folsom. I brought my old Eagle fish finder to check depths from the ramp up to and beyond the bridges. I enjoy diving under the bridges. You never know what you might find there. BTW, one of the deepest spots was under the north end of the old bridge. I found a few holes as we headed upstream.

Anyway, we went up river just past the painted rock the crazy kids jump off. They told me it's called "Tit Rock". I see why. Then I thought this might make for a good drift dive. Paddle up stream, then drift back down towards the bridge. I'm sure it's been done before.

Have any of the locals done this? How far up did you go to start the dive and how long did it take?

Thanks,
Alan

Hi Alan,

Personally I haven't dove Negro Bar but I'd like to get out there and scrounge around for some stuff. However, Seavonj and I decided to head out to Brown's Ravine yesterday since it's been a while since we've been out there. The whole parking lot is under water and the lake is almost full. We had a lot of fun for Folsom Lake diving and actually managed to squeek out 75' off the bottom of the boat ramp.

Hey Alan! I have done this drift dive several times, a couple from just beyond the walking bridge, once from the infamous painted rock, and twice even further up. I can't say it's that great of a dive (Why do I keep doing it? It's close to home and takes care of my scuba itch). There are usually crawdads to look at and strange things to find that people throw in the water. I have seen maybe five fish total. It's hard to find a deep spot, but sometimes it gets really dark. How long does it take? Well that depends on how strong the current is, how much you swim from side to side of the river, and your tolerance for the cold.

Thanks for the info Naomi... Farthest I've been is the old bridge. I'd like to try farther up sometime.

Using my old fish finder, I noticed the hole below the painted rock was 20 something feet deep. Got me thinking about what might be down there. Things fall out of pockets when crazy kids make jumps like that. The water there is moving too fast for me right now.

I was considering a dive with my daughter at Folsom on Sunday, but she is having knee problems again. Might haul the kayaks to Cosumnes instead.

the hole below "tit rock" is only 20 feet deep? I grew up in folsom and my buddies would go jump off that rock, I would never do it. Being that its only 20 feet deep I can see why I never did it now. I know the shop in Folsom has some neat stuff they have found under the local bridges. While taking a tour of the dam about 15 years ago I remember them saying the water comes out pretty darn cold, 38 if I recall but I know its warmer. What temps are you registering in the summer months diving that area? I plan to make a couple of dives in the river and in the lake this summer as I will be living in Folsom again for the summer.
