Out at the Flower Gardens last weekend for my first test of the S400 as an underwater camera. The shutter lag sucks, and the recycle time cost a couple shots, but overall, I'm happy. It is light, easy to use and being able to review the shots is great.

The Manta/Whale Shark pics are at the end so you at least have to scroll through the generic fish pictures. All were taken on 7/19 or 7/20 at the Flower Gardens in the Gulf of Mexico.

Very Nice! Now you have some entries for our next Fish Butts photo day! haha

Nice job Kong,

Good pics for a first trip with a new camera.

We dove the Flower Gardens at the end of May and captured a very similar Manta. Wonder if it's the same one.

We're going back the end of August. Hope the Manta and Whale Shark are still around.

Bonaire is on the top of my list of places to go that I haven't been to yet.

I couldn't tell by the markings if the manta was the same one or not.

kdietz once bubbled...

nice photo's but you obviously ignore that PADI part about not interfering with the wildlife (Hanging onto a manta)!

I'll just say that's my specialty since most of my shots end up at that angle.

Once a butt man, always a butt man..

Did you see the whaleshark and the manta on the same dive? You sir are a bad man. And I am jealous.

Ruu...

They were back-to-back dives. The Whale Shark was diving inside an oil platform. As soon as I came back to the boat, I pulled the compact flash and stored it just to make sure nothing bad happened.

Then, the next dive (2.5 hours later), as soon as I hit the bottom, the Manta came gliding by. Then I wished I had kept the other memory card in since I was now using my only backup card and didn't want anything bad to happen to it either.

Luckily nothing bad happened and both memory cards survived.

I couldn't get lucky enough to see both on one dive. I'm amazed they were both within 4 hours of each other.

I also wished I had switched the s400 into movie mode and taken the 3 minute video of the thing as well. (next time)

Shoot, I want to go diving as much as kdietz does.... and not in lakes!

Nice pics all of you!

Comparing the underbelly's of the two, the similarities are remarkable. Assuming this was the same manta, I wonder if it seeks out divers to investigate? I'd like to get down to the FG's sometime soon.

Karl, which shop in the DFW area do you tend to use?
