Videos like this one make me instantly call BS every time a shark "expert" explains that shark attacks are 99% of the time test bites, and that the animal realizes it's mistake and swims off. I do understand the strategy of staving off animosity to sharks so that the general public doesn't cheer on Chinese fin harvesting, but lets be honest, sometimes sharks mean it.

No mistaken identity in the case being discussed or with the fatal incident in Sydney, Australia last year and no doubt many others. The view taken by most recreational divers on the subject is naive, bordering on a Disney-like perspective of the world. Great whites, tigers, bulls sharks and one or two other species are big, dangerous predators. Fortunately, we swimming monkeys aren't their normal food source and they generally leave us alone, but if the opportunity arises and conditions are right...

How else can you prove it was the particular shark? This is typical Amity plot, catch some big shark to sooth the public to ensure tourists are not scared. They will probably call some shark expert to asses the situation, perhaps they would do an autopsy at that stage. And later they will announce that it was the mating season (this it what was said last year) drawing the sharks there, which is total bs imho because tigers mate 1nce every 3 years and between March and May. No word on this could be caused by human activity.
I guess you could do a DNA test on the food contents to check if it is human.

Not sure that the Egyptian agencies would do that though

Most of the shark attacks in that area are from Oceanic White Tips. Do people know for certain what type of shark this was? I am also curious about the water depth where the attack happened.

The locals told me it was "Tiger Shark." I am not certain of anything, this is what I was told from people there. Egyptian FB and other channels say the same.

it was a tiger
see on facebook the page taucher.net
you see videos in the comments from people killing it. so sad

We are currently in Soma Bay, around 50kms south of Hurghada, and the whole coast down to here has been shut off to divers for 48 hours. Considering the statistics I feel as though it is a little bit overboard to condemn 50 miles of coast. There are many sharks here, and the incident per tourist/diver capita rate is extremely low. It's far better to be a diver than a snorkeler though, that's for sure.
We were at Breakers/Orca Diving to collect our gear this afternoon and there were not too many smiles to be seen. It's a huge upset for the Dive centers who have no business for 48 hours and I am quite confident that the government will offer no subsidies.. This is their high season and 48 hours must feel like an eternity for them, especially when there is no guarantee that the Govt will re-open the coast after the 48 hours, they are praying that no-one finds a 2nd Tiger Shark in the area..

We are fortunate as we're heading of on a LOB for a week.... we only lose a single diving day.. It's a lot less fun for those who only have 4 or 5 days shore diving.

As divers we are strongly advised not to float/splash around on the surface, but to get up the ladder, or bac in the Zodiac without making a fuss, it's good advice.

A thought must go out to the unfortunate Russian snorkeler, outside of the political arena, no one merits such a terrible demise.

how deep is the shut down?
also to coral garden? there is the sister center from orca

This is a good question : effectively the Coral Garden is not so far from here.
The shut down is for a stretch of 76Kms, as the crow flies from Hurghada it is quite possible that Coral Gardens might also be included, it would be on the extreme end, it all depends where on the exact starting point, unfortunately I cannot confirm this, if you are going there send them a quick email or give them a call. They usually answer their emails quite quickly.

in know tom, the owner of coral garden. we are not comming soon. just wanted to check if you can dive there
