I too had a herniated disc at L4/L5.... It plagued me for years. It was so bad that one leg was beginning to drag. I bought a HANG-UP ( Inversion Table ) and using it completely cured the ruptured disc. I hung upside down for 20 minutes per day ( read newpaper etc ) and the disc came back to a full form and shape ( natural traction by your own upper body weight ). If your have any artificial joints (hips/knees), it's not advised.

For my philosophy read the thread "Latest Back Treatment" so you'll know where I'm coming from.

If it were my back I'd not even consider diving until the injury and treatment were totally resolved. Why?

First, there is no reasonable way to know when you'll have a spasm or debilitating pain. Having that happen in the water, or in a place not immediately conducive to strong pain relievers is not something I'd even want to think about.

Second, the discomfort from that injury could easily mask a subsequent injury from diving. That has really bad potential consequences.

Third, the most reasonable treatment for back pain involves time and monitoring treatment progression, or decline.

Nope, if it were me I'd remember this is supposed to be a fun sport and opt to focus on fixing the back problem.

snturner: Just curious -- did you eventually do the dive or not?
-- also did the epidural help or did you have the surgery?

I'm in a similar situation. I had microdiscectomy about 4 months ago, and I'm wondering if diving now would still be risky.
