FYI all,

Well, I sadly report that our local dive spot is going out of business.
I got an email about it today and then talked to someone down
at their shop on the phone who told me about it also.....

Rock Divers which operates Madison Aquatic Park is closing.
They will be open this Saturday and Sunday, so LAST CALL
if you want to dive there..... They will be permantely closed
come Monday (9/12/05)

So.... This is a notice to all in case they want to try to dive there
a last time before they close and also to those who might be planning
a future trip anytime soon and gets there to find a "padlock" on
the place.

Hopefully this is only temporary or another shop might take it over.

-Mike

I hope it isn't permanant and that Madison can find a dive shop that takes the new contract (if there is one available) and makes it better than before.

I got OW certified there. Lot of potential at that site. A lot has been done as well. Any word on equipment sales at the DS? Any word on if the place is for sale?

I agree.... it's a great place.

As for shop/equipment sales... They dont' do much in item/gear sales in
the first place, so they have never had "much" in stock to sell off....
If you wanted to buy something, they had to order it for you pretty much.

I'm not much for buying rental gear based only on the fact that it's been
over used and abused. Their wetsuits have been pee'd in by who knows
how many. I might see what they are letting go their rental tanks for though....
But depends on how much they want for them....

Any word on if the place is for sale?

You mean the operation/business or the sale of the Quarry property?

The Quarry is owned by the city of Madison and the operation is
leased to Rock Divers on bid. Rock Divers is owned by several people
and I don't know if it will be sold or what. I imagine that it will most
likely just "dissolve". Their contract with the city to operate the
quarry was up in October I think anyway.

I don't see Madison selling the property.

I'm hoping that one of the other shops will pick up operation of it
so we'll have a local quarry spot.

Just an update on Rock Divers and the Madison Quarry.

Yep. Tomorrow (Sunday sept 11th is definately their last day).
Talked to Earl the manager there. He too just found out about
all this on Friday (yesterday). Fun huh?

He hopes to see the quarry re-open open a "new" company
sometime soon (I think by spring). But he doesn't really know.

Anyway. "Everything is on sale". For the most part everthing
is about 50% off that I could tell. (Now 50% off means 50% off
already inflated prices). But Tanks from the rental fleet were $50 each.
Nothing was priced on sale, but you had to ask Earl and he told you the price.
But it seemed all to be about 50% off the price listed (which was MSRP)

They are pretty picked over and stuff is scattered pretty decent,
It looked like the toy department at walmart during christmas time.
(Toys lying everywhere in the floor scattered)
but here is some of the pricing I saw on stuff.

Tanks (AL80's) - $50 each. (at lunch saturday, they had about 25 left)
Pinnacle Wetsuits - $79 each
split fins - $79 pair/set. (not sure what brand, but looked like Tusa or similar)
wetsuit hangers - $3 or $3.50 each.
Scuba-pro rental BCD's - $50 each (they looked rough)
rental regulator sets - either $100 or $150 each set. not sure. (did not see condition)

They had two Mares wrist computers (large screen), but they said they were old
models and had been in the case for at least 4 years without being sold.
Being that old, I didn't ask anything further on them.

Didn't see any "new" regulators or BC's. But they've never really kept
any of that stuff in stock much anyway.

Pretty much the best deal was the tanks. All were "used" but some were
pretty old and some were "almost new". At $50 each, you can't beat it
ir they are in current hdyro. I did see some that had a 2000 hydro on them
though.... Most that were left had a 2003 hydro on them and looked in good shape.
There "were" a few that were new with a 2005 hydro and nitrox tanks. (but
gone now).

Anyway.... Hope that helps anyone that might be interested in the Quarry
operation and the gear sale.

Hey Mike -

Did you happen to pick up any tanks over there that you may want to sell later?
Just wondering since I won't be able to make it by Sunday

I didn't get any "extras" to sell, but I might be headed back over
there tomorrow if you want me to pick some up for you.
Just let me know.

Only disclaimer is that I don't know what's left. It might be a tank
with a 2000 hydro or a visual that expires this month for example.
So if you want some, realize that you might get the "runts of the litter".

let me know. No guarentees I'm going back tomorrow though.

Heads, up. They may not be open tomorrow or they may close at 1:00. Earl said they were trying to get everything out of there today or early tomorrow. As of 4:30 today when I was in the shop they didn't have a lot left and a bunch of the Seas members bought stuff after I was in.

So check before you go.

Thanks for the warning Luke. I tried to call you today after I went
over there to see if you wanted me to pick you up any tanks.
I guess you were still out working in the yard.

There wasn't much left when I was there. Stuff was scattered all
over the floor "everywhere". It looked like the "Toy aisle" at Wal-Mart
during Christmas season after it's been attacked by kids.

Anyway, hopefully it'll get re-opened by someone over the winter.
