A short airlplane ride.
I think it is about 10 minutes if that.

I dove Utila last April. I did see a whale shark.
They had been seeing them almost daily in the weeks before my group got there.
 
I am going to Utila in March...and hoping to see whale sharks!! We are staying and diving with Deep Blue which I have only read and heard amazing things about...
It is the season for Whale sharks in March/April so those are definatley the most ideal times.
I have been to Roatan twice, but this will be my first time to Utila. I think if you are looking for the whale shark sighting as your main goal then Utila it is. Roatan is a great place to dive as well, and you can't go wrong either way!!

yea and i also got to see 3 or 4 of em in October and actually get into the water....which was cool.......and they saw a couple in December, we went into the skiff to go see, but it was on the north side of the island and it was really rough....fun boat ride....LOL but would've taken forever to get there in the skiff....
