It seems pretty redundant to post a trip report since Cajuncrudiver (my better half) has been posting about our trip on a regular basis. But I'll do my best to add details about all facets of our trip.

The first segment of our Roatan trip was an eight day visit at our favorite hangout - Fantasy Island Beach Resort. We had a room in the newer wing of the resort. This is our favorite area because we are morning people and love to wake to the amazing sunrise over the dive gazebo each morning. I have taken so many pictures of the sunrise! The room was very functional and comfortable. It was a great place to relax and rest between dives and meals. (Which means you don't actually spend a lot of time in your room!) I am a technology geek...I really enjoy the fact that Fantasy Island provides a television in each room so I can keep up with my favorites back home. (GEAUX LSU TIGERS!) I also love the fact that Fantasy Island provides free wireless internet in the lobby. I am able to use Skype to keep in touch with family and check on the home front. I also made a feeble attempt at reporting to Scubaboard, but then just gave up and let Cajuncrudiver take over :) I was having too much fun!

This trip I found the food much better at Fantasy Island. There is a buffet with MANY options available. I can't imagine anyone not being able to find things they enjoy eating at this buffet. The food is good, but the ice cream is INCREDIBLE!!! There are three mouth-watering flavors available at each meal. I usually managed to get second servings of ice cream every night. Fortunately I was exercising enough to keep from gaining too much weight.

Speaking of exercising, the diving was incredible as well. I have never experienced such drift diving on the island of Roatan. There was an incredible current all week long. It was fun to "ride" along and just be picked up by the boat after an hour or so, but I am a photo maniac and it wasn't the best way to snap great photos. Still, we managed to see more than our share of fantasatic sea life and got some pretty decent shots along the way. The thing that surprised me the most was the surprising presence of lionfish on the reefs of Roatan. I didn't expect to see one while we were there...but we actually saw FOUR!!! The dive shops are gearing up with tools to kill them, but I'm not sure anything will really make a difference...they're everywhere.

As usual, the dive operation at Fantasy Island was perfect for us. Daren was our divemaster and Pedro was our boat captain. What a dream team. Daren has a unique way of watching over all of his divers without becoming too obtrusive. He manages to find all kinds of incredible sea life to share with us. And Pedro is always there to help you up the ladder and to your seat. While we were diving, Pedro was on the boat slicing up fresh pineapple, watermelon and papaya for us. These luscious fruits were always in abundance, along with fresh filtered water to drink. Each dive is a joy with these guys.

After the conclusion of each dive day we always managed to take advantage of the free bar drinks that are also included in the price at Fantasy Island. Of course we had to teach the bartenders how to do the "Cajun ********"...which they did very well! This popular drink is catching on in a big way. Next time you visit Fantasy Island be sure to order one just to keep them on their toes! We spent numerous fun hours in the bar area playing on the internet or sharing our dive pictures with others on the big screen T.V. It was great fun.

After our eight day stay came to a conclusion, it was time to embark on the second segment of our adventure...diving the north side of the island from Anthony's Key Resort. Upon arrival at AKR, we were able to unload our gear in time to jump on the boat and join our friends who had arrived the day before for the afternoon dive. It was a great dive and we were amazed to see FOUR turtles on one dive! It was a great way to start our week of diving on the north side of the island. Unfortunately, the good feelings came to a screeching halt when it was time to put our dive gear away for the night. Being somewhat claustropobic, it is very difficult for me to be in cramped quarters where I can't move around. The locker room at Anthony's Key was an absolute nightmare for me. I was assigned locker #80 for the week...all the way in the back left corner of an extremely narrow, cramped locker room. I had to weave my way through MANY people who were doing their best to get things out or put things into their lockers, all the while being interrupted by divers needing to get by to reach their own lockers in the depths of the restricted room. At that point, the dread set in...every single day I dreaded the end of diving because that meant that every diver at AKR would be trying to rinse their gear in the same two rinse tanks and get their things locked away into their dive lockers...in the dreaded locker room. As it turned out, all of the boats did not always arrive at the same time at the end of each dive day, so the crowd was not ALWAYS so great...just usually. Other than the locker room, I thoroughly enjoyed the diving at AKR. Even though we had specifically gone there to dive the north side of the island, as luck would have it a nor'easter blew in and stirred things up. Conditions deteriorated on the north side of the island rapidly. AKR reacted in a very professional manner and shifted to Plan B...diving the SOUTH SIDE OF THE ISLAND!!! Since we had just come from there, I figured it was a good day to rest. Instead of fighting the wind and rain, I decided to stay in and chill out a bit. That was flawed thinking on my part. Remember the part about how I am a technology geek? Well, at AKR you are supposed to enjoy the peace and quiet. No T.V. in your room...no phone to call my buddy who was staying in a cabin on the key to arrange a meeting time for Cajun Boogaloos, and worst of all...no modems available so I could have internet access. Even if I had been willing to pay the $ 250 deposit and $ 50 per week charge, there were no modems available. So by lunch time I was seriously regretting my decision to take the day off from diving. The next day the weather was still the same, but I jumped on the bus in a heartbeat to go diving again - I couldn't stand another day of just sitting around!

Fortunately, the weather did improve and Wednesday thru Saturday were fantastic. We enjoyed the balance of our dive week and made new friends at AKR. Hopefully we'll have the opportunity to visit again in the future. I can't say that the diving on the north side of the island is better, but it's very different from the south side. It was nice to experience a little variety on this trip and take it all in. I'll still be returning most often to dive the south side of the island where I think the most interesting creatures are the most plentiful.

Sorry for the length of this trip report...I do tend to ramble on, don't I???

So CajunDiva,

How was the food there? Other than the lack of connectivity, TV's and a small locker room, how was the rest? Were the guides and boat captains good? besides the turtle, was the diving at least interesting? Currents? Boats? you know, hopefully some of the good stuff. We have a week at AKR planned for December. I was looking forward to hearing some of the specifics about AKR, not just the stuff you didn't like.

I did say "Fortunately, the weather did improve and Wednesday thru Saturday were fantastic." Sorry I didn't go into enough detail for you...thought I was beginning to write a book and didn't want to bore everyone :)

The food was absolutely the best part about our trip...almost gourmet. For breakfast they offer you a menu, from which you can order whatever you like. For lunch and dinner you can choose from 2 offerings. Usually one is seafood and the other is either steak, pork or chicken. There is a set dessert - everyone gets the same thing...take it or leave it. The side dishes are the same no matter which dish you choose, so there is not a lot of variety, but it is prepared VERY well and I never tasted anything that wasn't fantastic.

Yes, the divemasters and boat captains were good. There was water on board and they did offer you apples if you wanted one. Just like at Fantasy Island, you get three guided boat dives each day. There were 15 divers on our boat. If they had been courteous divers I don't think there would have been a problem. Unfortunately, they were completely clueless and I was kicked in the head more times than I could count, so I definitely felt extremely crowded all week long. The boats are nice. They are fiberglass and do tend to bounce a little more, so if you are prone to seasickness you might want to take that into consideration.

On the days we were able to dive the north side, the current was ripping there as well. Most dives ended up becoming drift dives, but weren't necessarily planned that way from the start. It got kind of confusing at times, but all worked out fine. Of course the diving was interesting. If you like wrecks, it's the mother lode. We dove the El Aguilla on Thursday morning and the Odyssey on Friday morning, followed by reef diving later in the day. We saw larger fish life on the north side...lots of grouper, snapper, turtles, etc. We did not see many eels on the north side, except the large green moray that lives at the El Aguilla wreck. He was free-swimming and interacting with a Hawksbill Turtle...too cool! We even saw one seahorse on the north side, which was a pleasant surprise to me since little creatures are my favorite :)

I am happy to answer any questions you might have. Feel free to ask...

Thanks, I was starting to get concerned as I have never been to Roatan and had heard good things about AKR in the past. I really do appreciate your report, for both sides of the Island! Sorry if I sounded a little rough. It is hard to make a comment without sounding different than I intend. I know I would be well served to use the emoticons. I have been around clueless before, on a Cozumel trip on 1 dive I got my reg ripped out of my mouth, my mask knocked off and kicked in the jaw, by the same person! Thanks again for the answers! We will get there the day after Christmas for a week. We are so excited. My wife doesn't dive but is still really excited to go to a new and different place.

No, you didn't sound rough at all. It's just hard to know what people want to hear and what is boring to them. Please feel free to ask me anything you'd like. I'm always more than happy to answer questions about Roatan. It is my favorite place in the world, and right now the island is suffering terribly from the B.S. going on politically. The island is so unaffected by what is going on in the capital city of Honduras, but the tourism industry is suffering miserably. I am happy to hear you are going in December. I wish more people would do the same - it's absolutely the best time to go. Many resorts are offering 2 for 1 specials to encourage tourists to come back. I'm sure you will love AKR...I loved it too. The problems I had are personal in nature and probably not something that would bother anyone else. It is a very efficiently managed dive resort...you are going to have the time of your life!

My wife is a non diver. Do you have any suggestions for activities for her? We have looked at the zipline. She is going to try snorkeling and we will probably do the snorkel with dolphins. She is fairly adventurous, any recommendations for other activities. She is also alright with a book and and cold drink and relaxing but she will something of a "divers widow" during the day. Thanks again for your response.

Well, let's see. At AKR there is the Roatan Institue for Marine Sciences (RIMS) It's a small museum that will occupy a few minutes of her time. Then there's the gift shop. We women usually enjoy a little retail therapy. And then there are various tours available, such as the zipline you mentioned. They used to do dolphin shows, but when we went to check on that, we were told that the dolphins "don't want to come out of their pen any more" so they have stopped the shows. You can still go over to Bailey's Key and look at them, so that might be something she would enjoy. There is a snorkel boat that goes out every day...she may enjoy that. If she doesn't feel like snorkeling, there is a lovely swimming pool and bar on the key. Probably the most fun would be the horseback rides. You can sign up for morning or afternoon rides...fun! Lots of options are available, but I would still recommend bringing a few good books or some kind of project to play with during down time.

And, it's just a quick cab ride to West End. That could keep someone busy for close to a day, what with lunch and all.

Try the West End, or... get to Coxen Hole or the Cruise Ship dock just before on the day that the ship disgorges the pod people. The "straw market" should be in full attendance by vendors! When the ship is in, you can count on AKR, West End, Coxen Hole and the Zip Lines to be very busy.

This right now is "off season":, but when you're there, ask about the scheduled arrivals so you can be aware and plan ahead.

Hi dmoore - that's great you are coming to Roatan. I checked the cruiseship schedule and as of now (this often changes due to weather, etc.) there are no ships coming to Roatan on Dec 26, 27 and 28, so these will be the best days to enjoy West Bay Beach (awesome snorkeling south of the dock by Infinity Bay) or tour the island and do touristy activities. There will most likely be others your wife can hang with and there are kayaks at AKR for exploring the waterways. There is an awesome day spa at Parrot Tree in the east area of the island that can easily take a whole day. There is also a great lagoon beach, huge pool and Palapa Bar/Restaurant there. Its called Sante Wellness Roatan Hotel Massage Spa Body Treatments | Island Retreat at Sante Wellness Centre, Roatan Honduras - The owner Angela can be reached through the contact page and she will help with arranging transport. From Oakridge area of the island, water taxis can do tours including the mangrove canals built by the Payan Indians. Upon request they will stop at Hole in the Wall, one of our favorite watering holes. Have fun! Enjoy the island!

We are going with a group from the LDS. I know there are other non divers going too. We have been planning this trip since March of this year. It is one of our bigest vacations ever! Thanks for all the great info! My wife will be checking everybody's suggestions out. Sounds to me like she will run out of time before she runs out of things to do! Thanks again!
