I'll rent a car so we can travel around and do groceries if needed.
Now… about cars and vehicles.
>Search< here on SB or even TA. This is an oft discussed topic.
There really isn’t much to “travel around” to, number 1.
You can hire an English speaking driver for the day if you want “to go exploring”. No pith helmet needed. Roatan is what it is- not much to see or do outside SCUBA. There is very limited shore access and effectively NO shore snorkeling much less un-hosted diving.
People ask legit questions about personal safety. Common answer? Stay in the West End, enjoy the daylight. The rest is debatable.
The roads suck. Parking anywhere West End is at a premium. The drivers suck. The pedestrians suck. The speedbumps suck but not as bad ss the potholes suck. Emergency Medical and Ambulances DO NOT SUCK… they’re just non-existent.
The tort liability system is predesigned against foreigners and even worse for one-week type visitors. Hit a stray dog and everyone within 100 meters will claim him as their prized purebred. If a motorcycle t-bones you, they win. You are presumed at fault, your passport might well be held by the police. (It’s cheaper for them rather than putting you in jail and just as effective)
If you must drive to complete your experience, buy loads of Honduras specific insurance back home, buy everything being offered at the Island rental agency, DO NOT rely on your CC coverage. Carry several $20 bills and at least two $100 bills. Don’t flash them all at once, lest your victim’s pain and suffering suddenly escalate.
5 out of 6 vehicle renters have a great experience!
Similar odds with Russian Roulette.
