Great Scott! ;)

You had some really tough breaks....what a trip!
Hope your next dive adventure is "double cool" to make up for it.

~j~
We have had a lot of great trips together as a group and none of this stopped us from having fun and we were bound to have a tough one. This group of six only get together once a year, several of us see each other regularly but others are busy or live elsewhere so no matter what it is great seeing the guys every year. We have a name for our group to give an idea of how we all think. It's called the "Zall Good Divers".

What a bummer! Sounds like a lot more effort and inconvenience than it was worth.
Your right. Any one of the things on it's own was easy enough to deal with even most of the items are bearable if the diving is spectacular enough but it just isn't in comparison to places like Belize or Coz. If we were ever to return which I do not see happening I would never dive a cattle boat again so we would have to find another operation to go with.

Funny thing you mentioned about having headaches while diving. I experienced the same problem during my first dive, and all subsequent dives.
It was not only me either. Toward the end of the week there were several others also including the 12y/o. I told them about it so hopefully they check on it. I do not think it is a wide spread thing but I do think some of the tanks get effected when the boats are being warmed up in the morning when the wind is just right. Of course this is just my humble opinion.

Daren is one heck of a DM.
I couldn't agree more, he saw what was going on and did everything he could to accommodate but he had his hands full babysitting most of the dives. You can only do so much with one in tow.

I'm still fighting for a refund from SOSA Air. They (the agents for FI who set up reservations for the resort and flights) sent me the hand written tickets, which had the wrong return flight times on them.
I found the puddle jumpers to be informal as best. It seems they kind of made the rules up as they went. It was SOSA who finally got us to the Island so we are appreciative of that because we were not looking to waste another day or have to spend the night.

We took the bus from FI to the airport, with plenty of time to spare, only to find out that our plane had left more than an hour earlier. Naturally, they didn't have another flight for several hours, which would mean that we would miss all of our connecting flights.

We were told to check with TACA Air to see if they had seats available (to La Ciebre (sp?). They were full so we had to wait and see if there were any no-shows.

As luck would have it, two seats opened up and we happily paid for them. However, they were not able to guarantee a flight from La Ciebre to San Pedro Sula. We took our chances and flew with TACA.

Yep, you guessed it...no seats available in SPS. The nice people at SOSA made several phone calls (because they knew they had made an error on our tickets) to our booking agent and "made them feel really bad". So SOSA chartered us a private jet......and by private jet I mean probably the first ever built two seater Cesna.....that I had to hold the door closed on for the entire flight after I leaned on it on the taxiway and it opened.
Sounds like the adventure we had. I saw the plane you are speaking of. At one point we were going to charter it but it would have taken 3 trips to get all of us and our luggage to the island.

We made the rest of our flights, but SOSA is refusing to refund our TACA flight citing: "We went well above and beyond the call of duty by chartering you a private flight".

Yea....BS. Had they written the correct time on the tickets to begin with, there wouldn't be an issue. Had we not caught the flight with TACA, they would be paying for all of our missed flights.

I figured that SASO was going to give us the runaround, so while we were at the airport in Roatan I had them give me a copy of their flight plans. This clearly demonstrates their error.

When we returned, I called the booking agent for FI and explained the problem. He said he would take care of it. Two weeks passed and I hadn't heard from him, so I called. That's when I found out that nothing was going to be done about it. I told him that I would just contact my credit card company to have the amount deducted. That's when he got irrate. He said that he would be talking to the airline rep at DEMA about it and would get back to me.

Yep, you guessed it....he hasn't got back to me. I'm assuming that he's trying to drag this out until the 60 day mark has passed. Unbenounced to him, I've taken the preemptive strike by calling my credit card company.:eyebrow:
I think the people there run by their own rules so calling the CC company was really your only option. Good luck with that. We had flight insurance which is going to cover all of our extra expenses including the day of diving we missed but it is not really about the money. This is a once a year thing for us and most have a tough time getting a week off because of our jobs so we like to take full advantage of that time off. In the end we were all together and had a good time. I hope I did not sound too negative in my report. I tried to write it unbiased as I could but I must admit that is kind of tough to do while I was sitting there scratching myself to death from the scabies, and having to sanitize everything in the house and from the trip.

What a "perfect storm" trip...you didn't say what airline, but we fly Continential out of Houston and have not ever had a problem...fortunately on our many trips to Roatan and FIBR in particular we have not eperienced those problems.....we did have a really bad dive group on one occasion but the nice bunches on the other trips made up for it, we did have a bit problem the first trip then we found out about no see ums and cactus juice.....wife got sick first trip but then we realized that while drinking water was purified, the fresh fruit, lettuce and etc on salad bar was washed in water that wasn't purified and once we stayed away from that never again a problem. Hope your next trip to where ever is uneventful and joyful...sounds like you had enough of problems!!

We, too flew Continental out of Houston. No problems what so ever with them. In fact, we were surprised that they served dinner on both flights:shocked2:

We where on Continental out of Burlington VT. They were good to us once we got to someone in charge but it all could have been avoided had the original agent just put us on any one of the 5 other flights out of there to any hub. From there we could have made a connection to Houston and we would have been fine. Basically it came down to one bad judgment call by one lazy agent, she is also the one that passed off our group of five to the newly minted agent.

It happens....usually over the course of 3 or 4 trips though we just got all the problems on one. lol.

If I had to say what irritated me the most of all the issues I would with out a doubt say it was the cattle boat and this could be easily remedied by adding one or two more DM's to each boat. Let each DM take a group of no more than 8 and I would be willing to bet they would end up with more tips also in the long run. I know there would be much happier divers.

One thing about FI many should know is it is set up for the casual diver. The boat does just one dive at a time and returns to dock. They get a lot of people that want to do just one dive or maybe an early dive skip the 2nd and hit the 3rd. The problem is they set up all of their boats for the same thing. It would not be that hard to put like divers on like boats and accommodate everyone not just the one type. I would like to have seen a 2 tank morning dive followed by an afternoon dive. This would have given a much better use of time and it would have made doing 4+ dives a day a lot easier.

The airline thing was tough going from we are all set to go on a great trip to having ti yanked out from under us to it's back on to it's off to it's on, flying first class to arrive in a place with no way out of to having a glimmer of hope to it's not going to happen over and over again but we did get there, safe and sound. A day late but there and we have to expect this going to a place as remote as this. The bed bugs, it happens to the best of Hotels. The scabies was kind of a shock but the more i read on them the more I realize it just happens, avoidable for sure but it's not life threatening so a little inconvenience can be handled if the diving is that good, unfortunately it just did not rank up that high in my book to places like Coz.

Next year we are talking about Grand Caymans.

Ya but was yours served on glass plates with real silver wear? We had three free cocktails before the plain was loaded and a few while in flight, not to mention the wine with dinner. I must say I could used to first class travel, I'm to cheap to pay for it but I could get used to it.

Well now....aren't we just Mr. Fancy Pants!;)

[Poking fun at Scott mode on] No, we didn't get the 7 course meal with libations.....but then again, we got to Roatan on time without any hassles. [/mode off]
:D:D

Well actually shorts to be exact......they give us first class types cozie little blankies. Maybe that were I got the scabies.....ewwwww. lol. I have to laugh about it.

I am quite sure with the group of five we had even if they had sold us the first class tickets they would have lost on the free drinks. :crafty:

I am trying to decide if I would have given up first class for being on time.....hmmmm. I probably would have if it had included actually flying into Roatan instead of the middle of Honduras. :rofl3:

Hey! I just remembered that there was a group of about 6-10 divers that specifically requested that they have their own boat and DM. They told the shop manager that if this were to happen, they would make sure that the DM/Captain/Shop manager were "well taken care of".

They got their own boat.

I should mention that this particular group were from a dive shop organized trip. They heard about our issues with a particular DM and asked us if we would like to join their group. Really nice folk.

So you couldn't have told me about this before we got there huh???? :rofl3: :D :D

That would have been a great idea though. We met a few other real nice people so we coul dhave easily made a group of eight and I have no problem tipping well when deserved.
