That's how it sounds after a six pack of Salva Vida. At least the first guy who said it got the "tan" right. ("tan" rhymes with the name Shawn.)

Kind of, depending on who is saying it. See what I wrote on the You Tube thingie when I posted it. Bill, you are a Texan, and most of y'all seem to be most happy with the "Roya-Tan" (pronounced just like it's written) in a 2 syllable version, or sometimes Houstonians go for a different 2 syllable "Roy-Tan".

This "bumper" appeared a half dozen times in a 30 minute You Tube compendium of this "Roatan Channel".

It has the feel of something they might show on the Cruise Ship before they disgorge the unwary. Altho there was maybe only one real-deal Real Estate Eddie Haskell type, everyone on the film was reading from the same script. Slightly slippery.

Made me wonder what island they were talking about.

I was born in Houston and spent 99% of my life in Texas. Yeah people do it different. Strangely the word Roatan is quite variable with how they like pronounce it. The people I meet in Texas usually like the three syllable version Row-ah-tan with the tan sound the same as sun tan lotion. I assume the first time they ever saw the word was reading it on the Internet like I did and that's their first guess. I picked up the tan like Shawn pronunciation from Roatan locals when I visited there in 2010. I consider it the most correct way to pronounce it since that's how the Roatanians (is that a real word lol?) were saying it. At least no matter how it's pronounced you don't confuse it with another word.

I believe the local Club is the Roatan Rotarians.

President is: Roseanne Roatanadana.

The "locals"... well- that critter may have several definitions. Locals- as in Garifuna? As in of Honduran Mainland descent? As in land-owning elite that sound like Cayman Islanders?

Most visitors never meet that last class of "locals", the ones that own the fishing fleets, the big commercial operations, and most of the land. These people do indeed have Cousins over on Cayman, and to us, they sound exactly like Cayman Islanders. (If you ask a Cayman Islander, they immediately have their version of "Hillbilly" popping into mind)

Anyway, the way this group of "locals" say it is "Rah-Ahh-Tahhn".
