Roatan-nicest place to stay & good dive op

Hello, love to dive, but also like to stay in nice place with a/c and tv for my espn loving husband. (I know, I know) Heard West Bay had great beach and Mayan Princess was pretty nice. Close to west end restaurants and bars. Anyone stayed there lately? Would love to hear the proc and cons.

Also would like suggestions for dive op.

Maybe I should mention that we have been to Belize, La Paz, Bonaire, BVI etc so I'm not expecting 5 star. We just like a little upscale and with a few creature comforts. Also, an incredible view and easy walking access to bars/restaurants is important as we don't like to drive much.

I highly suggest diving from a liveaboard. The Utila Aggressor is a major step up from the old Bay Islands Aggressor (no longer in existance). The Utila Aggressor is a 14 passenger dive boat that was built especially for diving....in luxury.

If you think you may want to go, I have one deluxe cabin left on the Utila Aggressor for the week of June 30-July 7th. I am not a dealer or agent. I am the one who arranges to book a whole boat each year for a group of friends. I just recently got the opening available as a situation caused one of our dive friends to cancel.

Be aware that electricity and cable is very iffy in Roatan. Even when the electric works, places that advertise cable TV will often have a signal that makes old bunny-ear antennas look like HDTV. If television is a must have, find a place with satellite service (DirecTV or Dish) and call to verify their lineup first. Do not assume that ESPN will be available unless you confirm beforehand.

Lastly - West Bay and Mayan Princess are not close to the bar and restaurant scene of West End unless you consider a 40+ minute walk to be close. You need to look in West End if you want to stay in West End - West Bay is a 15 minute cab rid, 10 - 15 minute water taxi (daylight hours only), or 40+ minute walk from West End.

Check out the Beach House in West End for a nice place ($$$) to stay. We dive with Coconut Tree and love them to death, but if you are staying in West End it will take you less than an hour on your first day to walk up and down the street interviewing dive shops and picking one that suits your diving style and makes you feel comfortable. That is what we did a year ago and will be coming back in May for our third trip in 12 months to Coconut Tree Divers.

I don't really want to stay in one of the more remote resorts such as Anthony's or FIBR as we like to walk around in the afternoons and explore and hit the various beach bars and little cafes. Don't want a long cab ride to go to dinner and don't wan't an all inclusive. Too many fun places to eat and drink. Wild night life is not our thing as we are usually in bed by 8pm to get up and dive the next day.

West Bay Beach looked just about right. Great beach, a few beach bars/restaurants and the ability to water taxi to West End for $2 for more variety and a couple of little stores.

The Beach House looks interesting. I'll check it out.

Doesn't seem like many people stay at Mayan Princess. Looks pretty nice.

Another vote for Beach House. I haven't stayed there, but I got the tour. The decorator did a great job and the rooms are large and richly furnished. Some of them have kitchens. The view from your private balcony is as good as it gets, and there's also a private pier for more lounging. Only four rooms. Location is perfect. No restaurant, no pool, no bar.

That is why we decided to stay at West Bay. We will be there in two weeks and are staying in one of Foster's cabanas but diving with Coconut tree divers.

Danktex, looking forward to your review. Have a blast. Let me know which place on West Bay you think is the nicest and which little beach bar is the coolest! I've decided West Bay is where I want to be. Beach just looks too good to pass up.

Just got back from 15 days in Roatan; first week at Luna Beach Resort near West End and second week at Sante Wellness Center on the South shore the second week. Luna Beach is in a very good location as you can walk 10 minutes into West End for all of the great restaurants and 'island' nightlife. Not sure if any of the rooms have television; our house did not. Sante is more remote and is definitely not a divers destination, but if you are looking for a day at the spa definitely check it out! Also, the shop at Luna Beach is a first rate operation.
