Make sure you get the proper meds and vaccines (Hep A, Tetnus, Malaria, Polio, Typhiod) before going. All it takes is one bite. Also, DAN insurance.

Seriously? The PADI Travel agent (and Continental Airlines) said Malaria [was the only current threat] and Roatan was not on the list - only the mainland.

So, you like DAN over V & B? Why?

My girlfriend is a Nurse Practitioner and was advised by Doctors who have been to Roatan to get the vaccines. Also, this site was recommended by one of the MD's:

Better safe than sorry. At least get a Tetanus and a Hep A.

A general must do for any travel abroad.

I'm not sure I know what V & B is.

Actually there have been a number of cases of malaria mentioned here and on other forums in recent memory. Keep in mind that malaria isn't a minor inconvenience or simply a potential trip-spoiler; my uncle contracted it in WWII and suffered from horrible revisits of it for more than 50 years before he death 3 years ago.

Thank you for the info, both ContinentalAirlines and my PADI Travel agent are sorely mis-, or under-, informed... at least they were until I sent them the link that you sent me and the CDC link http://www.cdc.gov/travel/camerica.html

It's my bad for not doing my own homework and relying upon others that I thought I could trust. I sincerely thank you for the info... first rounds on me!

So, in 9 hours I become a human pin-cushion... Hep A, Hep B, Malaria, Typhoid and a Tet booster... I can't wait.

Tet shots are never a bad idea if you travel to any island. Salt air rusts most metals & a simple cut can turn ugly. Most islands don't have a huge supply of the shots on hand, but have to wait on a shipment form the mainland or other.

RE: all others, it's your vacation, you've worked long & hard for it. A few minutes of pin cushion is sometimes a small price to pay for your peace of mind if nothing else.

Agreed, well worth it... peace of mind: priceless... for everything else there's American Express. But when did they start giving shots in the tricep?!
