Hey... Going to AKR for the first time March 11-18 and just want to confirm that cell phone service is not an issue. Is this 5-bar territory? Many thanks..........

As long as you have the write network it shouldn't be a problem. Check with your service provider at home to make sure they have a roaming agreement with the Honduran service providers.

If they do not you can buy a SIM card for LPS100 ($5), but even then it may or may not work with your phone depending on whether the phone is locked and the correct type.

I have Cingular wireless and can call to Central America for 40 cents a minute. The usual cost is about $2.10 a minute. I had to buy a montly plan for $4.99 to get these rates.

HOWEVER....if I call from CA to USA, I still get the 40 cent rate BUT I have to pay roaming. Be sure to check out all the particulars with your cell phone company.

While we were in Roatan, my friend called from the hotel phone to check on her kids. It was $1.00 a minute.

Renting an international phone may be an option for you.

Thanks for feedback. I travel internationally from time to time so have a tri-band phone with the Cingular international roaming service (but not the $4.99/mth, just the free unlock... so I pay the higher per minute rate). Everything should be good to go as long as the local network coverage is okay. I imagine it should be fine in AKR / West End area based on BayIslandDiver's reply. Thanks... I'm so ready to go diving...

I was in Roatan last May and I also have Cingular international service and tri-band phone........I could never get it to work. Better call Cingular before you go.....
