I thinking about goring to Roatan next June. We've been doing liveaboards (with an added week somewhere en route) but I thought to give one of these dive resorts a shot. Hubby and I are experienced divers (DIR, Tech, gills, etc) and we want a trip with nothing but diving and eating. Sleeping is optional :D.

I'm leaning towards Bay Islands Beach Resort because of it caters to technical divers so I figure we'll have less hassles over our gear or a crowd of once a year divers. Maybe I'm wrong. Either way it seems to be a better fit. Plus Spooky Channel looks like a lot of fun. Problem is this: 1 week is way too short of a vacation when one is coming from Alaska. I prefer 2 weeks at a time. Is this the type of place where we could spend 2 weeks and not get tired of the same boat dives? Do they repeat the boat dives every week? How much is there to see when shore diving? I can't seem to get a good idea of the size of the front yard.

Is there another option for a second week that doesn't involve a another plane trip somewhere? Any suggestions?

Note: We won't be doing any technical diving. Just Nitrox recreational profiles.

We spend 2 weeks in Curacao, I love it, If you only have a week, you lose 2 days in the airport right off the back. We only have 10 days this year, it makes me so sad. We have time to explore and dive our tails off....

This resort is just average. A friendof mine did this resort last feb. - Ave. carib diving. Maybe splts a couple of weeks with Cocoview vs. fantasy island and akr.

My other option is a liveaboard to Saba and then a week in the Keys again. Or a week in St. Kitts at the end of the liveaboard. I suppose I could do the liveaboard over again as a back to back in the reverse direction...

I spent 2 weeks in Roatan in June. I dived everyday for 13 straight days, some dives were repeated, but the diving was so great that I really didn't mind. Spooky Channel was strange and fascinating; one minute you're plodding along in near-darkness with 15 foot viz, the next minute you're bathed in brillant sunlight and 100 foot viz. It was Mother Nature's underwater light show. I made 26 dives total, and all were boat dives.

I dived with Coconut Tree Divers in West End. They are a good, safety-minded dive op. With the relatively high priced airfare, and relative low priced diving and lodging, I felt that a 2 week trip made more sense than a 1 week trip. I feel that I made the right decision, and my next trip to Roatan will also be for 2 weeks.

26 dives in 13 days...ON ROTAN??? What the hell did you do the rest of the time?

A combination of 1 week at BIBR and 1 week at Cocoview sounds like a great way to see both southside and west/northside and do a lot of diving. They both do 3-4 boat dives a day and unlimited shore diving on their house reefs.

I spent a week at Cocoview this past August, got in 23 dives. I have links to videos in my signature if you want to see what the diving on the southside is like.

If you take the time to look at the itsy bitsy stuff, you could spend months on the south side seing new and wonderfull things and never get bored. Even doing the same site 2 or 3 times. Roatan Man had told me about this before I went and he was right on. Now if you don,t like taking your time and looking at the small stuff, 2 weeks at the same resort might be a bit much (just my oppinion). You could easily do 1 week Roatan, 1 week Utila...

If you want to dive your brains out, Coco-view or fantasy island is probably the way to go (2-4 boat dives a day + unlimited shore dives). If $$ is no object, Cocoview gets rave reviews and seems catered to giving you as much Nitrogen in a week as is humanly possible!!:D (I'm kidding obviously!!). The dive OP at Fantasy was a bit sloppy (Being DIR, you might not like that). But if you are like me, and take care of everything yourself (like double checking the Nitrox O2 content) it's not a problem. And It's the best value I've found (600$ a week).

Just my 0.02$

I've been to Coco 5 times now - does Fantasy have "drop-off dives" as per coco? This is much of my favorite diving - getting left behind on Menagerie and swimming in real nice and slow (90+ min).

Tx!

If you want to start on the north side, I go along with your suggestion to split the trip and go south for your second week. Why not see some new dives and terrain?
