I am planning a dive road trip between New London and Cape Ann from about 7/28 to 8/5. I am looking for recommendations on shore dive sites, kayak dives and charters between those locations. Planning on a half day dive in Rhode Island on my way up and back and the rest of the time in the Cape Ann area but I am open to any other ideas in that general area. Looking mainly for shallow low impact dives, places to stay and ideas for what to do when I am not diving.

As far as Cape Ann goes, one of the local shops/boats has a pretty good description of a lot of the shore dives. Welcome to Cape Ann Divers! cape ann divers, cape ann diving, boston diving, scuba boston, massachusetts diving, scuba massachusetts, new england scuba diving, scuba new england, north eastern usa scuba diving, scuba resorts usa, boston dive boat div

For shallow low impact dives, I'd recomend some shore diving. There are a lot of sites that are a pretty easy walk in (Old Garden Beach is my favorite) If you're looking to do some boat dives, you can't go wrong with the Fran and Matt Marcoux and the Daybreaker (Cape Ann Charters). Cape Ann Divers also runs two boats.

I will be off the boat those dates, so if you're looking for a buddy let me know.

Thanks, looks like exactly what I needed. What are the laws regarding out of state divers taking lobster and scallops? What are the laws if any regarding dive flags? Are there any reasonable places to stay in the area? I usually dive alone but you would be more than welcome to join me if you are available.

No lobsters for those out of state. I don't think there's a permit needed for scallops (there is a daily bag limit, though). Your best bet for scallops is going to be a charter. Dive flags are required for shore diving. Nothing on Cape Ann is really "reasonable", but as with everything, there are relative deals.

I'll second this, for scallops my go to boat is the Keep-Ah with Boston Scuba. The only issue with scallops is many of the boats stop running scallop charters during the summer due to increased boat traffic over many of the beds.

In MA shellfish laws are different from town to town. Boston requires no permit, so that is a good place for scallops. Boston Scuba is a great charter to go with. They visit some nice wreck sites also.

If you want to dive for lobsters, you will need someone from MA with a license to get them. As long as he/she is the one that takes them out of the water....
I would volunteer, but Cape Anne is a bit of a drive for me.

Where are you going to be for your half day in RI? I would reccomend a shore dive at Ft. Whetherill. There are both shallow and deep shore dives there.

Ft Whetherill was my first choice for a RI dive. Also was considering what looks like a pier or part of an old bridge just south of the west end of the Jamestown bridge. As for kayak dives I was considering going to Horsehead point from Ft Whetherill and Dutch island from Ft Getty park. I could do Ft Whetherill and Horsehead at the same time and chose between the pier and Dutch island for the other. Any idea what the parking like for someone from out of state at these locations? Any idea if these sites are worth the time? If so what are the tidal considerations I should know about?

I forgot to ask about camp grounds in the area. Any Suggestions?
