So I''m sitting here in triage tonight and there isn't a whole hell of a lot going on. Every half hour or so I get a kid with a fever (real patient, real problem, bring them right back), I've got a guy sitting across from me who either has a mouse in his shirt pocket or is hearing voices. (He's harmless, he's not going anywhere and I don't have a spot to put him where someone can watch him, so he sits out here with me and I watch him.) I've got a drunk sitting down the end of the waiting room doing play by play on the ball game. (He's irritating the crap right out of me but thats more because I want to listen to the game and I can't hear over his blathering.) And I've got one of our regulars who has developed a taste for prescription narcotics who keeps coming up to me every 20 minutes of so trying to convince me that if she doesn't get some Demerol real soon she will probably keel right over and die (I've been doing this for more than 10 years, Delores. I've gotten real good at spotting people who are going to die. You ain't. At least not tonight, from foot pain. Go sit down, they'll get to you. Maybe by sunrise.)
So the long and the short of it is, I'm bored to death. And I'm looking at the upcoming winter and thinking about how I need/want to get away. Ishouldknowbetter and I are going to Little Cayman the end of October. That will hold me for a while, but I've got 4 weeks on the books that I need to use or I lose em. So I'm thinking about a trip to FL in Jan/Feb. I was thinking about driving down so I could go to a few widely scattered places.
Here are some distances and times between some FL dive spots;
It's about 1300 miles from Boston to Ginnie Springs. 21 hours of straight driving.
From there it's 415 miles to Key Largo. About 6 1/2 hours of driving.
Then it's 736 miles to Pensacola. About 11 hours of driving.
It actually looks like the ride from Key Largo to P'Cola goes right by Ginnie Springs so maybe the thing to do is go straight to Key Largo and hit GS on the way to P'Cola.
I figure 2 days to drive down. (I drove straight from Key West to Boston once with 2 other guys 25 years ago. The only time we stopped was for gas, if you weren't done pissing by the time the tank was full you were getting left behind. We made it in 27 hours. The 25 years since then have made me, if not smarter, at least less likely to knowingly make myself uncomfortable, I'm willing to stop and sleep enroute.)
2-3 days of diving in the Keys, then drive up to GS.
One day of diving there. Don't need to be cave certed to dive in the cavern. Maybe a second day to dive one of the other caverns open to sensible folks how don't want to swim 5 miles into a tunnel.
One day of driving to P'Cola.
One day of diving on the Oriskany. If the funds are holding out, maybe go for a second day.
Two days home.
Feel free to critique the game plan. Suggestions welcome.
Anyone wanna come? Ishouldknowbetter won't have the vacation time and she's probably too smart to want to come anyways. (Besides, someone should stay behind to coordinate Bail Bondsman and attorneys. Do we have an Extradition Agreement with Florida?)
I've got two daughters in college, so if this happens, we won't be talking 5 star hotels. I figure the major expenses will be gas and beer. Maybe a bag of Fritos for the ride.
