Another vote for the Catalonia at Puerto Aventuras and using Dive Aventuras for your diving and local jaunts.
Puerto Aventuras is a resort/condo community about 60 miles south of Cancun (20 miles south of PDC) and 20 miles north of Tulum so it is well situated to provide good reef/ocean diving and easy access to the Cenotes. In addition to being at the Catalonia with its pretty good food and drink, it is a very easy walk to the main "mall" of Puerto where you can sip (well, does anyone actually sip?) 'Ritas and people (and dolphin) watch.
If you dive with D.A., they'll pick you up and then store all your dive gear at their shop for the whole trip which is a lot better than hauling it back and forth like I've done many a time.
