Hello,

Is anyone familiar with the artificial reef on the right side of this aerial map?
What's it called? Is it worth snorkeling/scuba diving? What have you seen here?

The formation appears to be similar to Turtle Reef and South Inlet Park in Boca Raton.

Thank you everyone in advance.

I have not dove or snorkeled them but have heard they are worth snorkeling: I've seen dive flags around the structures when I've been further out on dive boats or fishing boats. Also one of the snorkel boats in town occasionally take snorkelers there. As the attached indicates, they were added a couple of years ago for erosion control.

I have snorkeled over the area in this shot.....depth is about 7 to 9 feet deep...on clear days, when the seas are comfortable for snorkeling, this is a good site for new divers....it is comparable to the snorkeling trail that was put in at the BHB Marine park....and fine for scuba also....If you tip the beach guys that do the chairs and cabanas on the beach, you can probably get them to haul your tanks and hear with one of their ATV's and trailer...which makes the whole affair a lot easier there.....snorkeling it is just easier, given it is shallow anyway, and there is nothing much to carry.

Is there more you want to know about this area?

Thanks for the info, Dan!

With me being 5'-11" and only 130lbs, tipping the guys with the ATV is a great idea. I think i'll snorkel it first, to check it out.
What do the locals call this dive spot? Does the reef have a name?

Thanks again!

Not really a name anyone will know....Get to it by parking at the public Beach....walk to the extreme North side of the public beach...think of the alleyway between it and the condo to it's north...then begin walking out into the water....when it gets to be about rib deep, you ought to be able to see it on a good vis day....best will be if it is clear enough to be visible from the beach..which it sometimes is....And on weekends, you might see some dive flags there. Make sure you have one yourself !
Expect a slight current to make it easy to drift north...by the time you make it to the Hilton ( the send group of rocks, slightly further out, ends near the Hilton) , you are a good way down the beach, and you will probably want to walk back, rather than swim back.

If it is a nice day, the area by the Pumphouse and Jetty is actually MUCH NICER!!!

it looks you will need to drop off gear and a buddy at the dive site, then park the car...

with this being so close to the inlet, would the same BHB tide rules apply? (enter 30 minutes before high tide, exit 30 minutes after)?

Yes..use the bhb tides.....Also know that when the tide goes out....if you are not a fast swimmer and belly to the bottom, you are going out with it :)

As to parking....be ready to do a really quick drop off, as the local Barney Fifes don't like divers "parking or standing" on that area by the access road....

I have found a Vietnam Vet that lives 2 blocks away, and for a 12 pack of beer and some smokes, I can park at his place ( he does not have a car).....He is often sitting in front of his open door....
