Scuba diver dies in Walnut Grove, Woman rescued from American River in Rancho Cordova
RANCHO CORDOVA, Calif. — Two people, two incidents involving crews having to rescue people from Northern California waters.
The first happened in Rancho Cordova.
Sacramento Metro Fire Department says a woman was rescued from the American River.
According to Sacramento Metro Fire Department Public Information Officer Parker Wilbourn, the call of the incident came in just after 1:30 p.m.

Wilbourn says she was found about a mile downriver from where she was last seen in the water. The woman was taken by air ambulance to a local hospital where she is said to be in critical condition.
Meanwhile, the other incident involving the scuba diver happened near the Walnut Grove Bridge.
Walnut Grove Fire says the body of a recreational scuba diver was recovered there. The cause of their death was not released.
Both of these incidents are developing stories. Check back for updates.

The deceased woman was a “swimmer” and her unfortunate death is unrelated to the diver fatality. The bridge where the diver was recovered is located on the Sacramento River about 20 miles south of Sacramento. The river at this location is about 200’ wide with a depth midstream that is probably less than 15-20’ and near zero visibility. An online news update a few minutes ago states, “authorities said it was determined the diver had not used any of the air in his tanks.”

A scuba diver died hours after he went missing in the water near the Walnut Grove Bridge, the fire department told KCRA 3. A recreational dive team was on a boat on the Sacramento River around 12:40 p.m. when one of the divers entered the water. The divers did not see the man again before they called 911. Authorities found him a couple of hours into their search.
According to this article, it appears the man was on a dive-boat.

Speculation warning: If he used no air; a plausible story might be that the diver entered the water from a boat, without his BCD inflated, and potentially with their tank off.

I am waiting for more details, but this is not a local “dive site”, for training or otherwise. Cars run off the river road with some frequency and I would not be surprised if this diver who has been ID’d in the Sacramento Bee as a 42 year old male with 12 years diving experience wearing doubles was trying to locate a vehicle.

His name was Nathan Leon Lewis II, 46, of Rio Linda. It sounds like he was diving twin 80s solo, but didn't use any tank gas. A medical event or an extreme mistake including retaining weights in a panic? Maybe you can get the autopsy results in time?
