Hello, I bought a used BC for my LDS, and it was used for class. So the pool has turned the nice black to brown. My question is ::

Can I use RIT DYE to dye it back to black ? would this have a negitave effect on the material??

Thanks..

Yeah, you can, and it shouldn't hurt the fabric, but RIT would be my last choice of dyes, as it isn't particularly strong, it doesn't "fix" particularly well (meaning it'll fade quickly), and in general is only good for tinting, not coloring.

I've had excellent results using Procyon dyes, but I've only tried using it on cotton, so your results may not be the same.

1) Yes (but....)

2) Yes
(It would weaken it)

Ballistic nylon doesn't fare well under this treatment. You could probably paint it with less damage. Remove the bladder first. Not worth the effort or time, though.

Enjoy the very cool Caribbean DM Look. They all have brown BCD's. It's a Mark of Distinction.

You'll be able to pick your gear out of the herd...:D

Rit dye won't do much on most manmade fibers. You could do research on the fabric and proper dye to use (probably something acidic, sounds good for a BC, not!) I say leave it alone, just as likely to make a mess of it.

Don't use sharpie! I tried that on a small item, forget what, back in college and I had to throw it out because of that Sharpie smell... I mean, underwater it wouldn't matter, but for storage and making friends on the surface... not so good.

My 2¢

hmmm, maybe I just leave it the way it is, its getting time for new one anyhoo, I want weight intergrated.. :)

thanks for all the help/ideas
