Hi. I am staying in Kata for 14 days and wonder if I can do a day trip to Richelieu Rock or will I have to go on a live aboard? Has anyone done a day trip and what was it like.

I've been there by both means you ask about.
Day trip to RR, you'll spend hours in transit to get there and return.
Liveaboard is better, IMO, you can do it for around $300US for 3 days diving.

Opps, forgot to add post tsunami fewer boats are going out, so the day trip may not be available.

I've used South Siam divers with no real complaints.
They have a 3 day, 2 night LAB for around $320US, 11 dives.

That's the newer one (I think less than 1 year old). The other LAB is a twin of it, just older.
Clean boat, good food, nice crew, sun deck on top, shade deck below.
They do charge for crappy beer, but that's a good thing, right?

We did a day trip from Patong with IQ Divers. They (used to?) run a catamaran up there from Khao Lak. Not sure if they still do it. It's 1.5 hours by car from Patong to Khao Lak, and then another 1.5 hours on the boat from Khao Lak to RR.
It IS a lot of traveling back and forth from Patong though....

Right I have re edited this post. I now relise that if you go on a surin LAB you get to dive the similans as well. All for an average price of around $450 £239 15000 baht. Phew! Guess I'll book one when I get there. Yippee!

Brian, I was wrong. The South Siam LAB goes to Kon Bon, not to Richelieu Rock.

Richeleau Rock is a VERY long way by sea from Patong. Do the live aboard! I'm not sure if anything is going from Khao Lak now - it was pretty much wiped out in the tsunami as far as I know.

The boats to Similans leave from near Khao Lak. You get to ride in a minibus for 90 minutes first.
There is 1 SSD boat next week stopping by RR, a special.
