With all the changes and things happening for dive travelers, I thought this article was particularly timely and interesting. If anyone has additional information to add, please feel free!

Savvy Dive Travelers and the TSA

I appreciate the article Scott, but what changes are you speaking of? I didn't see any reference to any changes. Seems like the same as it's been for several years.
Bring important stuff like regulators, cameras, computers, etc in carry-on. Make sure you check sharp objects in baggage and you can bring a tank as long as it is open at one end.
Did I miss something?

Nothing new there. At least they didn't call the tank and oxygen bottle.

Was referring to changes in weight restrictions, etc. People ask questions all the time about what you can and can't take in your carry-ons. Thought I'd pass on a little information.
Changes? TSA never has had anything to do with weight limits have they...?
The TSA has nothing to do with weight considerations, but everything about what you can carry on to an aircraft and what you check in the cargo hold.

Last time I checked it was 50 pounds. I loaded up all of my gear once to go to the caribbean and my bag weighed 49.5 pounds. I got so lucky on that deal and in fact when I came back broke the bags up since the gear was no retaining some dampness such as my wet suit. It had dried quiet a bit was still damp so I just decided it was for the best :)

I have always wondered why they never say anything about my regs and what they must look like on a scanner yet they search peoples eye glass cases :shakehead:

Airlines commonly limit bags to 50#. I watch TSA agents inspect my checked bags personally and I don't think they have any scales.

I went through a lot of TSA screening on a recent trip (4 times going and 3 times returning) - The TSA does not care about weight ....

Do do seem to care about can light batteries, rebreather cannisters, and several other things though ;)

The weight limit is typically 50# with most airlines, but it isn't universal. Be sure to check teh airline's website before you travel.

Hawaiin Airlines, for example, is only 20# (or was it 25?) ... not much more than the weight of some wheeled carry-on bags.

That depends. On my last business trip I had two check-ins and both were over 50lbs and my airline didn't say a word. (limit 70lbs for FC).

Yeah, a couple of airlines allow me to check 3-70# bags if I wanted. I take about everything I want, including a 12 cup coffee maker, but usually just check ~ 130#, roll-on ~ 40#, backpack ~ 20#. I was replying to some posts above. TSA doesn't use scales.
