One of my ears has always been a little "thicker" and slower to clear than the other. Last weekend while freediving on a few of my ascents I noticed that ear squeaking and seeming like it was being slow to re-equalize and even felt a little pain, so I sat the rest of the day out. I am thinking of diving again this weekend but am I in any danger? This ear still feels thicker than the other. So here's my main question, When I am ascending will it help if I open up my e-tubes using my muscles or valslava to prevent reverse squeeze injuries from happening?

use whatever method that may help you equalize.

the key is to equalize before you feel any pressure building up.

that means the instant you start changing depth equalize EVEN IF YOU DON"T FEEL ANYTHING YET.

the best is that you do not feel any pressure difference in your E-tube.

The people at Divers Alert Network www.diversalertnetwork.org have helped a lot of people. Their non-emergency help line is a good place to start.

My guess is that voluntary opening of the e-tubes will help avoid a reverse block, as will opening the tubes with the jaw and throat muscle action of a vasalva. Of course, the scuba diver option of just re-descending and then coming back up again can be a bit more of a problem for a freediver like you.
