I've had this happen twice, and I found for me even better than a slow ascent, was no ascent. (Obviously not forever.
) Get as shallow as you can without pain to conserve air, but I think you'll usually have the most problem when you get to a shallower depth. As long as you've got air and there's no emergency, just try giving things a rest for a bit instead of trying to keep coming up.
