We are getting back from our first family trip to Tokyo. No diving involved as I’m the only active diver in the family. What we’ve done in the past was to go to places where I can fit in some dives on the side. The good news is that we had a great time. My daughter pointed out that the plane flight from where we live to Tokyo and Honolulu is essentially the same, and all the things she likes about Honolulu are even better in Tokyo. The bad news is that Japan will probably replace Hawaii, where I already have some sort of dive on the side rhythm working for me.

From my limited understanding, diving in Japan seems to be more organized around club trips rather than the a la carte choices I’m used to in SE Florida, Caribbean, and Hawaii. Are there places where a family can stay and have a great top side experience and I can slip out for a couple of morning dives, aside from Okinawa? Some of the links in the general knowledge post seem not to have survived COVID.

Unfortunately, Okinawa is really the only place where you can easily do a couple of shore dives before the family wakes up. That being said, Okinawa is only a 2-hour flight so maybe you can combine the two - spend a couple of days in both Tokyo and Okinawa  Domestic flights in Japan are quite affordable if planned well in advance.

Izu peninsula and Chiba both have good diving. there is an english owned dive shop in tokyo. name escapes me but pops up in a google search.

as deep diving said=, diving on the IZU peninsula and Chiba, plus plenty of options further south. However the diving will be a couple of hours + from down town tokyo

Here are 2 english speaking centres

I also know a Filipino dive master in Chiba who will be able to help if these two cant
