I'm planning on going to Cabo over new years. I'm going to set up a referral course for my sister and 4-5 days of diving for myself. I'm planning on going with Amigos del Mar mainly b/c they have been best about getting back to me. They are encouraging reservations with a deposit - is this necessary or just a scam?

Also, any good dives that time of year? No dive operator goes to Cabo Pulmo :-( and while some go to Gordo they seem to indidicate that could be nothing with nothing b/c big stuff may not be there...is it best to stay local?

Finally, do people think amigos is a good bet or are others (Manta, underwater diversions) much better...

thanks,

Bg

We are going to Cabo first weekend in December and Amigos del Mar encouraged us to make reservations also. I was confused because others on the board indicate that December isn't the peak season for Cabo but the dive operators tell me it is peak season. I was with you on wondering if the reservations was a scam.

Suzanne :)

You don't need reservations, although they all try to get deposits, that are of course non-refundable. I wouldn't make reservations if it were me. Underwater Diversions is a great operation though, and american managed so dealing with them on a business level is like dealing with anyone in the states. If you book your hotel at the Costa Real, you will be within a 5 minute walk from your room to the dive boat.

I agree with Justin, UD is a good operation, nice boat. AdM is also nice, but a deposit is not required. I have used both, and the last trip was with UD, I e-mailed them telling them what days I wanted to dive to see what their schedule was like, they CALLED me back, and we worked out my dive schedule over the phone. They told me just drop into the shop and let them know I had arrived. Now that's good business.

dlndavid,
We missed you at the Nor-Cal campout, and then you and I missed each other by a few days in Cabo, seems no matter where we go in the world, we just miss each other.

We used Underwater Diversions last Christmas and they were the best. They gave us a discount when we booked and paid in full. The owner is American and the reservations go through his sister who is in the states so you never have to call Mexico. They also sent us a full itinerary and everything so I had total confidence with them. They took really good care of us....we wear their sweatshirts that we bought!! If you need further info, email me and I will send you more information :D

I plan on going to Cabo on wednesday, December 7th. From all of your posts, I'll be going with Underwater Diversions as well. Can any of you offer any tips on making my experience there go smoothly? I plan on bring all of my gear, minus the drysuit and will only have one day available for diving. I plan on staying at the Fiesta Inn, any idea how far that's from UD? Do you have any must see spots: topside and underwater?

Tanks,

Ericson

I used Amigos Del Mar when my boyfriend and I were in Cabo last month. They told us over the phone that they would not be doing trips to Cabo Pulmo as well, however when we arrived, they had received enough interest that they scheduled one.

The people there are nice and managed by an American named Kevin. Both of the guys who took us out were great. One (Eric) spent a lot of one dive pointing out various fish species that we would not have seen otherwise.

And on our way back from Pulmo, they drove us to our hotel instead of us having to take a cab back.

I have not gone yet, but I have emailed with Underwater Diversions. They have been quick to return my emails and answer my questions. They told me October was their best month. They've answered my questions about accomodations and weather. They event sent me a link to a local weather website they use. If the dive experience is anything like the pre-trip contact, it should be great!
