When we had our wreck on Coz the American Counsulat was very helpful and really put my mind at ease as to what was going to happen. This is probably the difference between a tourist area like Cozumel and Mexico City.

Having all the insurance offered by the car rental agency is much, much less hassle than using a credit card to cover it, plain and simple.

If you do have an accident, all you will have to pay is the deductables and maybe a fine, if you use the credit card, you will have to pay the full amount of damage on the car, and the other car if the accident is your fault, before being let go by the police.

Oh yes, by the way, chances are that if you have an accident with a local it will be your fault regardless of the circomstances. Believe me, spending a day of your vacation in a Mexican police station is not as much fun as spending the day diving!!!

I would also "invest" in a carton of smokes. If you are a gringo driving in Mexico, your chances of being pulled over can be rather high and you may find yourself paying the "fine" right then and there...a pack of smokes as a peace offering to the peace officer can go a long way.
