Taxis aren't low cost if you are away from town and take several trips in a day. Taxis are good for going point A to B but not for driving aimlessly around town just to see things. Taxis can be hard to find on the east side of the island.

US insurance probably doesn't offer coverage but even if it did, that's between you and your insurer. Mexico isn't going to honor it or accept it, you'll be putting up the cash payment and filing your claim with your insurer to get reimbursed. Border riders are using policies purchased through Mexican insurers working with US brokers.

Again, why chance it? Considering the wide availability of taxis and the low cost of hiring one.

Its all a personal choice but we like having the freedom to come and go as we please. Its nice not having to worry about when to go to the east side...we have a car and we just go when we want. We stay in a condo in Corpus Christi and drive into town for dinner every night and pick up lunch every day on our way back from diving, its convienient and not to expensive. Even getting to the boat is easy..no worries with a car! If you stay at an AI resort perhaps a car is not as needed but for us, it gives us lots of flexibility. We just booked with Rentadora Isis for 210. a week including insurance and tax for a hardtop beetle. Well worth the cost for us!
