a = Work out the number of times a year you dive
b = Find out how much it is to rent a tank.
c = Find out how much it is for just an airfill.
d = Find out how much the yearly tank inspection costs.
Figure out the difference between renting and the airfill, and multiply that by the number of times a year you dive. Subtract the yearly inspection costs. This is how much you're paying the dive shop each year, that you could be saving if you had your own tank.
As an equation:
potential money saved per year = (a * (b - c)) - d
Say you dived 20 times a year, tank rental is $10, airfills are $6, and yearly inspection is $30...
potential money saved per year = (a * (b - c)) - d
potential money saved per year = (20 * (10 - 6)) - 30
potential money saved per year = $50
If you dived 50 times a year, you could save $170 - more than enough to buy your own aluminum 80, and be in front in just one year. Don't forget that you will eventually have to pay for a hydrostatic test as well - it differs from country to country how often you have to get this done.
