but I spend more time thinking about how to stay with my buddy and keep my buddy squared away (and hoping he/she is doing the same) rather than worrying about how good my CESA is or worrying about my skill in donning and undonning my gear under water.

That's true; i live in Egypt and dive in the redsea with a different buddy every time it freekys me out that i cant depand on my buddy that much; most of time i keep chasing them. And although i breif my buddy every time about my gear; and how we should stick close and so on 70% of the time i am ignored.

I think that OW courses dont focus on how to be a good buddy; beside Buddy check thats it.
being a buddy is a skill
