I'm looking to upgrade/transition to a better suited regulator setup.

I'm currently running a SCUBAPRO/Suunto Setup.

MK25 (Plain)
S600 (Plain)
R295
Suunto Vyper 2, 2 Gauge Console [Computer/SPG]

I dive cold water, <50deg, only. Unfortunately my LDS took me for a ride when I bought this setup. But heh, I was younger then.

If I were to sell this setup now, what would a conservative/middle range price be?

Or split it up?

I don't know how cold the water is where you dive. I know of several divers who dive a similar reg setup (S600/MK25) in water temps in the mid-40s °F without any free-flow issues. If you are diving in water colder than that, one option would be to replace the MK25 with the MK17, which is environmentally sealed. I suppose the second stages could be replaced with all-metal ones (G250V?).

The Vyper 2 + SPG will work perfectly fine in cold water. Why replace something that doesn't need replacing? If you insist on selling off your current reg, I'd recommend keeping the computer + SPG. If you sell off the Vyper2, you'll likely end up spending more money to replace it.

To get the best value on selling off the reg setup, I'd probably recommend splitting up the components. Do a search on Ebay for the individual items (used MK25 $180-$200, used S600 $160-$200, used Vyper2 $250-$400). Recently, a S600/R295/MK25 + SPG was sold for $400.

Just keep all of that and buy a used g250 (not the g250hp). They go for $70-80 on ebay all the time (they even come in funky colors!). The mk25 is a great reg, as is the r295.

If you really want to sell the s600 (which is a fine reg, too), they command a pretty high price on ebay.

I like the G250 idea. Also a balanced/adjustable would work perfectly and be ultra freeze-resistant. Couv on this forum could sell you one completely restored, even re-chromed if you wanted. Or, you could get a MK17 and sell the MK25, keeping both 2nd stages.

I have to admit, I've always viewed the mk25/s600 as a high-end setup. And I know mk25s can handle the cold. I would stick with the setup you have. Maybe get your rig serviced.

Mk 25's can freeze flow in rea;lly cold water, but we are talking sub 45 degrees here and then only when combined with poor cold water techique.

You could go with the sealed Mk 17, but otherwise I fear any "upgrade" will be disappointing as a properly tuned Mk 25 S600 is a very nice breathing reg.

Interesting, thanks. I'll look into the G250V, though it seems it's not all metal?

Given that I dry wet right now, I avoid really cold water, however one of my dives was 39degF and another around 43degF.

When I just got the rig I as diving with the 2nd stage valves tuned for maximum easiness, however as I've been diving more, I keep them at the maximum resistance and I've noticed a far deal of improvement in air consumption.

No doubt the rig breathes well, we'll see how it goes when I meet with a tech soon to get it serviced/tuned.

I guess I'll look into getting it better tuned, getting a different hose setup (long short, which I've been looking to do for awhile), and having it properly tuned. I'll look into the G250V also, although it doesn't seem to be all metal?

If you want a SP all metal 2nd, you can get the new A700 (for a high price I suspect) or the old 109, restored and converted to balanced/adjustable. Those are among the all time great classics of 2nd stages. If I ever get interested in cold water diving, I'll be using one of those, probably with a SPEC-equipped MK10.

You're right. I misspoke. The G250V isn't all metal. However, it is a proven reg in cold water.

See halocline's post above for recommended all metal second stages.

I suspect that the better air consumption you are experiencing has more to do with your increased comfort in the water and nothing to do with screwing in the knob.........you've got a high performance reg, no point in turning it into a dog by de-tuning it!
