If your DIR and concerned you should keep the bolt snap. If your not DIR and are just takeing bit and pieces of DIR than do whatever but understand the reasons for using the bolt snap.

1. bolt snaps on every thing. This promotes muscle memory, bolt snaps are quicker and easer than everthing else and far more secure than velcro.
2. As a system DIR builds upon its self, you may be only single tank diving now but if you get in to stages/deco bottles you will want the security of the bolt snap.

Plus your buddys will all have the bolt snaps. If I was diving with another diver who was dir and dident have the snap on the long hose I would be getting one of my spares for him befor we got in the water figuring that he had probly lost his some how :)

I dive cold water and use large and medium bolt snaps on everything, on the reg its a mediun snap and after the first few dives I stoped noticing it.

BassDean:
I've seen a couple post on DIR regulator necklace for octo or second, but does anyone use a necklace on your primary regulator?
BassDean

Nope. A necklace on the primary would not allow you to donate in an OOG situation.

The snap on the long hose is also good for keeping the 2nd stage from dragging around or shifting around while on the surface. Also used during deco/stage bottle usage as described earlier.

EZ, ah that makes more sense. I was wondering why a bolt snap would be needed just to store the reg. And why would storing my gear need to be DIR compliant as well... the stage bottle scenario clarified it for me. Thanks.
