My wife purchased a reg. off ebay that she intends to use as her secondary. We intend to have it checked out at local dive shop.
My understanding is that you should not be able to breath(inhale) on a reg. unless it is connected to a tank. Is this true?
This one breaths a little. If the above is true, is there a most likely cause of this problem?
Thanks,
Spencer

Generally speaking, that is true. If your reg isn't attached to a 1st stage and the tank pressurized you should not be able to breath air through the 2nd stage unless you push the purge button.

It sounds like it is just a bit out of adjustment. Your local dive shop should be able to take care of that for you when they look it over.

It depends on the dustcap- if it's the kind that seals airtight, then you might have a leak somewhere if you can draw a breath.

If you can breath off of it, usually, it's a bad diaphragm or a torn mouthpiece.

:cwmddd: To clear up the question, did she buy just the second stage?
Yes, first and second.

If your primary is an Atomics or other reg that has the seat relief feature, you will be able to draw air from the backup reg, even with a dust cap on the 1st stage.

What types of regs do you have?
Its a Sportsways brand.

If the supply line to the 2nd stage is sealed, you should get no air. If the hose is open, you will get some air. When just doing a vacuum test on a 2nd stage, hold your finger over the open end of the hose. Just inhale lightly and hold it. If you suck hard enough, the exhaust valve may come unsealed.

OK, how does "a bit out of adjustment" result in failing a vacuum test? And what does "pushing the purge button" when the reg is not attached to a 1st stage have to do with the results of a vacuum test? It is nice to see you guy trying to help with things like this but is the person making posts like this in any way knowledgable about what is being posted?

Wrong, you will be able to breath through it if the dust cap is off.

BTW, Sportsways went away years and years and decades ago. You will not find anybody willing to do much with that regulator--lol--and it is not worth anything either. N
