rongoodman:
Having the bungeed secondary on a 36"-40" hose would result in a huge loop out to the side. The standard length is 22"-24", but I went to a 20" to keep the hose from blocking my right shoulder D ring. (I'm not very big-150 lb).

I know, you'd have to use a swivel or elbow and rout the hose under your arm. Personally I'm just leaving my alternate clipped to a chest D ring.

Matt S.:
I'm no DIR diver, though I consider myself a sympathizer... I take what I like from the system. I adopted the necklace because it sure seemed like a good idea, and never looked back. (And the first time you switch to the backup with no hands, it's pretty cool!)
Agreed. Learn from what they do and why they do it, then choose what works for you and your style of diving...

That said, my LDS teaches this style in the basic SSI class, and here's the leash done with thin bungee on an Atomic setup (note Atomic Comfort-Fit mouthpiece on the primary for comparison)

and this shows the knots on both sides...

Also, since I haven't really taken note of it, how many second stages are able to be converted to a left side hose?

I'm not sure why you would be converting to a left side hose? In the setups being discussed, both regulators have the hoses coming from the right. The backup comes off the first stage to the diver's right and hangs beneath his chin on a necklace. The primary regulator has a hose which comes off the first stage to the right and either goes to his mouth, under his arm to his mouth (40"), under his arm, up across his chest, around the back of his neck and to his mouth (5'), or a similar routing with the hose either tucked under a can light, pocket or knife on the waistband, or simply tucked into the waistband to control the slack (7').
